Here’s more of what’s going around, including an entrepreneur’s plan to bring rickshaws to downtown Asheville. Here we go:

Here To There Adventure wants to bring rickshaws to downtown Asheville. “Rickshaws are environmental, efficient, fun, easy, and inexpensive. Asheville is environmental, fun and should be easily and inexpensively accessed by all,” according to the company website.  The city’s transportation director told Asheville City Council’s Public Safety Committee that the business has been reviewed and has preliminary approval, but the business will still have to get approval from the full council to operate. Asheville has seen a couple of versions of bicycle taxis in recent years, and for a couple of years had a horse-and-carriage business operating in downtown. We’ll see if rickshaws get approved.

Haiku I Do is the name of a relatively new, elegant venue that specializes in weddings and elopements on Sweeten Creek Road, right across from Hillman Beer. (Thanks to Brandi for this lead!) (@haiku_i_do on insta)

-Lost Hunt Vintage (@losthuntvintage) is a relatively new vintage goods shop in Asheville curated by three women. As far as I can tell, they only sell through Instagram. Anybody know more about this crew? They’re selling some cool stuff.

-There’s a new pop-up restaurant happening at Gan Shan West. It’s called Curragh Chase. Sunday (May 27) is the first time the pop-up will be open to walk-ins and the first time they’ll be serving brunch. Brittany Kroeyr says she and her business partner hope to open Curragh Chase in Asheville at some point.

-Speaking of vintage, Haywood Road on a Saturday morning is the place to be. Fleetwood’s has a cool “punk flea,” while a new Handmade on Haywood (@handmadeonhaywood) market is open at the deserted gas station at the intersection w/ Haywood and Louisana Ave. Meantime, The Odditorium has a funky occasional flea market.

-Rick Rice, a well-known former radio personality in Asheville and the former voice of the Asheville Tourists has landed a new job as location manager for Palmetto Brewing Company’s tasting room in Charleston. (Palmetto is now owned by Catawba Brewing.) Rick will be missed in the mountains, but give him a holler when you’re down at the beach.

Atlas Beauty is the name of a new hair salon at 915 Haywood Road.

Notch Collective is the name of a new hair salon at 506 Haywood Road.

Asheville Beer Week kicks off on May 25, with Beer City Festival coming June 2. Xpand Fest is June 9 down on the South Slope, with the Asheville Half Marathon happening the same day.

-In case you missed it: Asheville Brewing Company’s flagship porter, Ninja Porter, recently won a bronze medal at the Brewers Association’s biennial World Beer Cup Competition, held this year in Nashville. This is Ninja’s second medal after the brew winning gold at the 2014 World Beer Cup. Ninja Porter is one of Asheville Brewing’s original recipes, created by Doug Riley more than 20 years ago. Riley was the brewery’s first brewer, a co-founder of the company, and he continues to manage brewing operations for the 20-year-old business, which was Asheville’s third 20th century brewery, according to a news release.

We had a pedicab service in Asheville a few years ago. Didnt work out so well. The bike requires constant maintenance to the batteries that power the bike’s motorized assist and getting uphill is not easy. She eventually had to sell the bike and do other things. I’d bet they stay in business 9 months if that.

The rickshaws are a great idea! Clean, convenient, and a real help to those who have mobility issues (or just would rather pay someone to pedal them from Aux Bar to Orange Peel!).
