BLUE PLATE MAYONNAISE

Originally posted to Stu Helm: Food Fan Facebook page on 8/05/2021

So, check this out! A few months ago I wrote to Blue Plate Mayonnaise, and said, “Hey I’m a food writer living in solid Duke’s Mayonnaise country here in Western North Carolina, and if you want to send me a sample of your mayonnaise I’ll do a side-by-side comparison.” Then lo and behold, today a jar of their mayonnaise, and some swag showed up in the mail, including a wee little voodoo doll, a T-shirt, some beer cups, and Mardi Gras beads! This mayonnaise company knows how to party, y’all.

Well, Chef Jamie from Sand Hill Kitchen and I did our super scientific taste test with Dr. Mom today. Blue Plate Mayonnaise VS Duke’s Mayonnaise, and the results are in: They are both excellent, and in our blind taste test, they came out dead-even in overall score. Jamie was more consistent, choosing Duke’s more often, but even she chose Blue Plate over Duke’s in at least a couple of categories. Blue Plate was rated highest as a “spoonful,” and Duke’s was rated best for the deviled eggs, and they split the difference on the tomato sandwich. In conclusion, they are both high-quality excellent mayonnaise products, made in the south, using egg yolks (no egg whites), so it’s no wonder that, to me and Jamie at least, they were essentially the same. And there you have it. #science #thanksmom
