the_orange_peel_2014It’s hard to overstate the greatness of The Orange Peel. Since it opened in 2002, The Orange Peel has been rocking Asheville by bringing in amazing musical acts. Rolling Stone took notice in 2008, naming The Orange Peel one of its Top 5 music venues in the U.S.

From the bottom of its beer-soaked wooden floor to the top of its massive fan, the intimate Orange Peel has hosted everyone from Bob Dylan and The Flaming Lips to the Beastie Boys and the Smashing Pumpkins. And just about everyone in between. Last year, the music trade journal Pollstar listed The Orange Peel in its top 100 most-attended music venues in the world according to ticket sales.

Pollstar listed The Orange Peel as 29th, which made it the most-attended club in the Southeast, coming in above the Tabernacle in Atlanta and Track 29 in Chattanooga, according to the spokeswoman Liz Whalen, the Peel’s marketing and special events director.

“Obviously it is the wonderful Asheville community who have embraced lived music, supported our shows, and helped make our town an exciting, dynamic place that bands want to tour through that are in a large part responsible for this distinction,” Whalen said.

Promoter Ashley Capps, owner of the Knoxville-based AC Entertainment, has been booking shows at The Orange Peel since it opened. In an Asheville Citizen-Times story about the Rolling Stone ranking, here’s what Capps said about the Peel, a comment that would certainly apply here:

“We have always been excited about the Orange Peel since the beginning,” Capps said. “It is a place that is just right. It’s a great experience for the artists and a great experience for the audience. It really is one of the finest music venues in America.”

To thank the community for its support, The Orange Peel is teaming up with Ashvegas to give away tickets to the following shows:

The Zombies (legendary 60s Brit rockers) – April 15th
Rob Garza of Thievery Corporation (nough said! with our own Molly Parti) on April 18th
Slightly Stoopid – April 30th
Graveyard – May 6th
Deer Tick – May 16th
Lucinda Williams – May 30th
Abbey Road Live! – May 31st

So stay tuned to Ashvegas as I get the contests rolling. First up is The Zombies give-away, which I will post tomorrow. Congratulations to The Orange Peel!
