Here’s more of what’s going around:

-Kylie Irvin has been appointed the new program director at Asheville Music School, according to a press release. Kylie has been teaching voice and trombone at the school, directing student ensembles and leading summer camps for more than three years. Her intimate knowledge of the AMS Sound Education outreach program will help her jump right in to provide stability and inspire growth in the already thriving program, which brings the joy of music to underserved members of the Western North Carolina community, according to the release. Kylie will be able to continue teaching private lessons as well as leading ensembles and summer camps. Read Kylie’s bio and learn about her teaching here.

-Mission Health, under new owners HCA Healthcare, is doing away with its Healthy State business offshoot, which started offering health benefit products and services to self-insured employers about two years ago.

-Sidewalks are finally coming to Leicester Highway in Asheville. There’s an open house and public meeting to talk about the construction plans at 5 p.m. on Aug. 6 at Land of Sky Regional Council offices.

-Asheville has organized a chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts. The institute is the largest member organization for design, made up of graphic designers, photographers, printers, illustrators, typographers, and writers, as well as design students, and enthusiasts from all backgrounds and experience levels across the globe, according to a press release.  Reggie Tidwell has been named president. The Asheville chapter will hold its inaugural meeting on Aug. 1. Ashleigh Axios, a national board member of the institute and co-creator of DotGovDesign, will be the guest speaker. Tickets are $15 for members; $25 for non-members. To learn more about AIGA Asheville, Ashleigh Axios, and to purchase tickets visit asheville.aiga.org. -A new stoplight is going in at the intersection of Riverside Drive and Pearson Bridge Road. That intersection really gets backed up at certain hours

-Stonewall Sports, an LGBTQ and ally, community-based nonprofit sports organization, has  announced Asheville as the latest city to join its league. The sports group was founded in Washington, D.C., in 2010 to raise funds for local nonprofits through inclusive, low-cost organized sports. Since then, it has expanded into 17 cities including Asheville. Karla Furnari has been named city commissioner of Stonewall Sports Asheville. “This is a recreational league for all types of athletes, so we hope to quickly build a network of teammates, volunteers, sponsors, and friends. Stonewall Sports is truly driven by the community, so we want to listen to as many voices as possible as the league takes shape before our first sport rolls out in the summer,” she said in a press release.

-The folks at the Asheville Citizen-Times could end up working for new corporate owners if GateHouse acquires Gannett, the corporate owner of the Asheville newspaper. Cost-cutting and consolidation could further diminish local news gathering efforts. Nieman Lab has the story about the possible GateHouse-Gannett deal.
