Some of what’s going around to start the week:
-The All Go West music festival is set for June 17 this year in West Asheville.
-The Asheville Fine Art Show will be held on May 20-21 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville. The event is juried by art professionals and will award $1,500 in prizes and ribbons, according to a press release. -Asheville area restaurants on March 7 will donate 15 percent of their food and drink sales to Asheville Humane Society during the nonprofit’s 14th Annual Dine To Be Kind event, presented by Dr. David Crouch and Western Carolina Veterinary Surgery, according to a press release. Six restaurants are donating 25 percent of their sales: Avenue M, Native Kitchen & Social Pub, Posana, Roux at Hilton Biltmore Park, Smoky Park Supper Club and Sunny Point Cafe. Three restaurants, Doc Chey’s Noodle House, IHOP (all locations) and Mayfel’s, will be participating on Monday, March 6.
-The Montford Park Players have opened registrations for its popular summer program, The Montford Moppets. Here’s more:
The 2017 Moppets will be taught by regular actors and directors at Montford Park Players, Jeff Catanese and Ashleigh Goff. Last year The Moppets performed some of Shakespeare’s most-beloved scenes, with modern translations by the tweens and teens themselves. This year they’ll perform a shortened version of The Bard’s foreboding tales Macbeth. The final presentation of the show will go up before Montford’s premiere of the classic Peter Pan on Aug. 11, 12 and 13.
Registration is open to any kids aged from 9 to 17. The number of students who can participate is limited, so Montford Park Players urges parents to take advantage of the “Early Bird Special” rate before June 1st. -Paul Fetherston, Asheville’s assistant city manager, continues to interview for city manager jobs. Here’s a story about him interviewing in Littleton, Colo. From the story:
One candidate impressed with his communication skills in the interviews, but his background in another city raised concerns. Paul Fetherston, who is currently the assistant city manager in Asheville, North Carolina, was deputy city manager in Boulder until 2014. Many of Littleton’s department heads were told by counterparts in Boulder that he was “toxic” and a micromanager.
-Darby Communications, a boutique public relations agency in Asheville specializing in the outdoor, fitness and wellness industries, introduces, is starting a new program aimed at supporting environmentally-focused non-profit organizations, according to a press release. More:
Darby will select noteworthy organizations that exhibit a goal of protecting clean air, clean water, climate change, and/or deforestation mitigation. Selected recipients will receive the support of a team of experienced PR professionals to assist with fundraising efforts, event promotions, and/or social media campaigns. Interested organizations can apply here. The application deadline is March 15, 2017.
-The Junior League of Asheville, Inc., will commemorate its 90th anniversary this year with an intensified commitment to our community, according to a press release. More:
The JLA, organized in 1925 as the Junior League Club, joined the Association of Junior Leagues of America (now the Association of Junior Leagues International) in February of 1927. The coming year will be imbued with a recommitment to service through annual events such as Volunteer-a-Thon and ChildWatch Tour as well as new events and projects.
