NORTH SPORE MUSHROOM GROW KIT

Originally posted to Stu Helm: Food Fan Facebook page on 9/21/2021

Alrighty! I harvested most of the mushrooms growing out of my North Spore blue oyster mushroom kit, and sautéed them with bacon and tiny taters. I ate them with some leftover brisket from Buxton Hall Barbecue, and a sauce of my own making, and it was all very delicious! I still have half this cluster to cook tomorrow, plus I’m hoping more will sproing out of the kit over the next few days! Super high recommends for this fun kit! Stay tuned for more updates, plus part two electric boogaloo with my next kit: Lion’s Mane!

More overnight growth on my North Spore blue oyster mushroom grow kit! So exciting!!!

Originally posted to Stu Helm: Food Fan Facebook page on 9/20/2021

So, this morning I woke up and my North Spore blue oyster mushroom kit had started to sprout mushrooms overnight, and they continued to grow all day long and are visibly larger at the end of the day when they were at the beginning of the day! it’s the most exciting thing I’ve ever seen in my life! They’re beautiful! Now, I’m not quite sure when to harvest these puppies, but I think I might have to do it as soon as tomorrow! And then I can grow even more mushrooms out of this same Kit! This is great!

LOS TACOTES FOOD TRUCK

I went on Food Fan Food Pod lunch junket with Jason Sandford from Ashvegas today! First we drove out to Root Bar, where Los tacotes food truck was parked, and then we drove over to the Food Pod site, where we had our lunch on the big rocks, and took a look at some cool new fencing that’s being installed. Jason and I also decided to eat at 100 food trucks in 100 weeks. Should be fun, and filling! ?

BUXTON HALL BARBECUE

Originally posted to Stu Helm: Food Fan Facebook page on 9/20/2021

In typical Stu Helm fashion I showed up to my ChowChow dinner event exactly one week early last night, so I went to Buxton Hall Barbecue instead! Lol I’m an idiot, but it worked out in the end, because this food was fucking phenomenal. First of all, Buxton has a new mocktail program! They sent one to my table, and it was great! Fresh peaches with spices and such, it was sweet and had a little bit of a tiny heat/spice kick to it. Also I want to mention that Buxton Hall now gives you an amuse bouche of hush puppies before ever meal! It’s the most Southern amuse in America! ? As an appetizer, I got their wings, and they were fantastic! Small flats & drums, cooked perfectly, they came right off the bone, had a crispy skin, and a very delicious saucy sauce. Yes, the sauce was saucy. They came with a nice, traditional crudités of fresh carrots and celery. I also got the sliced brisket and two sides. The watermelon salad at Buxton is one of my all-time favorite sides, get it while you can, and the baked beans are also one of the best sides in town, they are sweet, smoky, with bits of meat in them. The brisket was savory and tender and the fat was rendered nicely and melted in my mouth. By the end of this meal, I was stuffed to my eyeballs, and essentially rolled to the bottom of the south slope, gaining enough momentum on the way down to get me back up the hill on the other side, and home. My dumb-ass mistake turned out to be my best idea all day! ? Thanks, Buxton!

VAPOR WORLD ASHEVILLE

Originally posted to Stu Helm: Food Fan Facebook page on 9/19/2021

So, I got this giant cereal bar from Vapor World Asheville that has full spectrum CBD and Delta 10 THC. Which is different than Delta 8, the other legal THC, and Delta 9, which is the illegal kind. The person who gave this to me said I should cut it into 10ths (you can see my math skills on full display here) because it can knock you for a loop. It did not, tho I did get high. For my tastes this bar was SWEEEET AS FUHHHHCK and I had trouble with that aspect, but like I said, it “worked,” as in: got me high. I think the diff for me is that Delta 8 & 10 THCs don’t get me as high for as long as Delta 9*… or just smoking regular weed. At this early stage in my testing of such products, I do recommend legal Delta 8 & 10 edibles for folks who wanna get high, but aren’t super into being fully blazed. And if you like sweeeeeet things, hit up one of these cereal bars.

Because it was so sweet, I knew I wouldn’t be able to finish it, so I gave 4 portions to a friend, and they had this to say:

“I thought it was great. I love rice krispy treats, the flavor wasnt overpowering and it definitely gave me a nice buzz. I ate all of them at once (mainly cause i was hungry lol) and it was almost overwhelming but really nice.”

* Thank you fellow food fan, Thomas O. for this information: “Delta-9 isn’t always illegal. It’s illegal if it comes from marijuana and legal if it’s from hemp and it constitutes .3% or less of the item’s weight. I would know. My middle name is Stoney Bologna.

ASHEVILLE TACO TRUCK

I got myself a bowl of elote, street corn salad from the Asheville Taco Truck at Descubre Asheville’s “Bring Your Heat Asheville” competition at Rabbit Rabbit yesterday, and it was really tasty! Like, REALLY tasty! I enjoyed it very much.

BRING YOUR HEAT, ASHEVILLE!

Originally posted to Stu Helm: Food Fan Facebook page on 9/19/2021

So. Many. Salsas. Team Food Fan (me, Rick, and Crystal) we’re a judging bloc in Descubre Asheville’s “Bring Your Heat” competition at Rabbit Rabbit yesterday. The competitors were Pupuseria Paty Asheville, Mamacita’s Taqueria, Nine Mile, Biscuit Head, Thai Pearl Restaurant, @Doc Helm’s, Chef Santiago Vargas, Fermenti, @Irlanda by Julio Betancourt, @Sidney Salsa & Hot Sauce, and @Chef Shane Castro, The winner will be announced today on DescubreAsheville.com! Stay tuned. ?❤️?❤️?

CONGRATS to Chef May from Thai Pearl Restaurant, who won Asheville’s first-ever “Bring Your Heat” hot sauce competition, presented by Descubre Asheville and hosted by Rabbit Rabbit last Saturday (Sept 18th). Chef May’s Sauces were flavorful, and spicy! She deserved the win very much!

Congrats to all the competitors, because there were no bad sauces! NONE! Doc Helm’s brought the creativity with a squid ink hot sauce as black on my heart, plus I gotta love their name! No relation. ? The two hottest sauces were from Chef Shane Castro & Sidney’s Salsa & Hot Sauce. My whole face was on fire. Whole face. On fire. Burning. Chef Paty from Pupuseria Paty Asheville had the widest variety of flavors and her coconut hot sauce was my personal favorite sauce of the whole day. Some folks I’d never heard of called Irlanda by Julio Bettancourt also scored high points with me for all three of their smooth, rich, almost creamy, sauces that had subtle but unique flavor. To everyone’s surprise, Biscuit Head brought pulled-pork to put their sauce on (the rest of the competitors just had chips), so they get mentioned here as well! (Basic rule of thumb with me:

Bring unexpected pork products, get mentioned.) ?

All in all it was a great event, and people seemed to be loving it!

So, the biggest congrats go to my good friend Luis from Descubre, for pulling it off, in just 2 weeks!!! That’s a feat, my friends, and he deserves big cred for making this fun event happen for us here in Asheville! I can’t wait for Part 2! He’s promised me sorbet when my face is on fire next time, and I mean to hold him to it!
