Subject: Paper Dolls: Images of Women in Media – 6p.m. Thurs., April 9

“Paper Dolls: The Art of Thinking Critically About Media Images of Women” is the topic of a free talk Thursday, April 9 by Duane Neil, chair of the art department at The Chapin School in New York City.

The talk is set for 6 p.m. at the Firestorm Cafe at 48 Commerce Street in downtown Asheville. The event is sponsored by the nonprofit Mountain Area Information Network and WPVM, 103.5 FM, the Progressive Voice of the Mountains.

Neil is a national authority on using art to teach media literacy via multimedia texts in the K-12 classroom. His techniques are used by a wide range of practitioners, including public health educators.

Neil holds a master’s degree in art education from the Rhode Island School of Design. He serves on the board of the Alliance for a Media Literate America and has presented at numerous national conferences on media education. His work can be viewed at http://www.duaneneil.com
