Sounds like one wild show. Press release from loyal reader Chall:
Talked about for years, with excerpts seen on various stages in drunken displays at different theatres, including a headlining slot at the 2009 Asheville Fringe Festival, Julian Vorus’s Rock Saber has its much-anticipated premiere at
The Magnetic Field on October 21st.
Featuring a group of Asheville’s best acting talents, in a way audiences would heretofore have hardly been able to imagine, Rock Saber is as affecting as it is vile, as offensive as it is hilarious.
The show follows the epic musical failure of a wannabe metal band called The Old Grey Goose Is Dead, and various characters they must contend with along the way–a shrieking harpy, the effete and menacing owner of The Suppositorium (a club where they play open mic night), drunken and violent audience members, and numerous others. Written by Julian Vorus, well-known as a performance poet and performer, the show features his established combination of offensive, stomach-churning writing with a bracing delivery. After the release of his CD The Nasty Namaste, the Mountain Xpress said that Vorus’s work is “…not altogether pleasant. Nor is it for the faint of heart, those with sensitive stomachs, low gross-out tolerance levels or an aversion to violent screaming.”
The Magnetic Field’s Owner/Producer Chall Gray, who is also directing Rock Saber, cautioned that this show will not be appropriate for many audience members. “I would discourage the attendance of anyone with delicate sensibilities, or a sensitivity to extreme profanity, drunkenness, pornography, or any number of other objectionable things that occur in the show,” he said, “but, above and beyond that, it’s a really amazing play. And we’re thrilled to have such a stellar cast–it’s going to rock as much as is possible, considering how heinously bad The Old Grey Goose Is Dead is.”
The bandmates at the core of the show are the narcisst lead-singer Heyman, portrayed by Vorus, diffident guitarist Babe, played by John Crutchfield, stoned and tripping bassist Thomas, ably done by Erik Moellering, and rageaholic drummer Kirk, brought to life by Steve Shell, the actual lead singer of one of Asheville’s best known punk bands Just Die!
“Just imagine all of your ex-boyfriends together in one awful band,” says Lucia Del Vecchio, who plays Liddy in the show. One thing is for certain with Rock Saber: if you can handle it, then you’ll probably enjoy it.
twas epic! -=WL=-
For those who haven't been to The Magnetic Field, you've gotta check it out. The shows are consistently good (this one has a uniformly strong cast) and tickets are affordable. The restaurant has good prices on excellent food and drink, and it's a fun place to hang out even if you're not seeing a show. Throw 'em some love!
I can handle it!!
