BookWorks is a really cool West Ashvegas business. Y’all should come out to this event and support these innovative artists:
BookOpolis, now in its third year, is an exciting weekend of artists’ books and print media including an exhibit from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 21 with live music under big tent and an open-house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 22 with hands-on activities. All events take place at Asheville BookWorks in West Asheville. BookOpolis events are free and open to the public.
The exhibit will showcase works that take advantage of the unique aspects of the book form: multiple surfaces, development of ideas across time, integration of image and text, interesting combinations of concept and structure, and works that take advantage of opportunities offered by this form for interactive and installation-like expression.

Last year’s event was host to over 80 works and over 100 guests. The Third Annual BookOpolis has expanded to include original 2-D prints, hand-printed posters, and letterpress broadsides. A selected group of artists’ books and prints will remain on display through Oct. 31.
This year BookOpolis will also host the kick-off event for a new non-profit artist residency program called “Interlude Editions.” Interlude Editions is an artist residency program providing funding and support for artists working in the book form. The program will invite artists to BookWorks to create artists’ books and original prints for education, exhibition and placement in museums, libraries, and private collections.
Fifteen book artists in WNC have created a small book edition titled “Whisper.” The small book edition will be on display during BookOpolis and will be shown in selected galleries and locations in Asheville. The edition of 15 small books will be donated for silent auction to raise money for the first artist residencies sponsored by Interlude Editions.
