gannett_2014Gannett announced on Thursday that it was closing down its printing operation at the Greenville News in Greenville, S.C., a move that will cut a total of 117 jobs there. Gannett Blog has the news here.

A story printed on page B3 of the Friday edition of the Asheville Citizen-Times also reports the news, saying that Gannett had reached an agreement with Halifax Media Group to print its two papers at Halifax facilities in Spartanburg, S.C., and Gastonia, N.C.. The change will be made April 1 and will not affect readers or advertisers of the print edition of the Asheville newspaper, according to the story.

The 42 full-time and 75 part-time employees may get a shot at working at the Spartanburg and Gastonia printing plants, according to the story.

Gannett moved the printing of the Asheville Citizen-Times to Greenville in 2009 when it closed the Citizen-Times printing plant and cut 60 jobs.

The move is another reminder that Gannett is constantly looking at ways to shave the bottom line.
