Green Opportunities, in partnership with the Asheville Affiliates, is hosting a fundraiser to support green-collar job training for Asheville’s disconnected youth and young adults. The event, known as
“Arts 2 GO,” promises to be an exciting evening of entertainment and celebration with Jamaican food (courtesy of One Love II), local beverages (courtesy of Barefoot Wine, Catawba Valley Brewing, Earth Fare, and The Green Sage), live music, breakdancing, comedy and poetry. Charlotte Street Computers is proud to be the Platinum Sponsor for all Asheville Affiliates events this year. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door, with all proceeds to benefit Green Opportunities.
Green Opportunities launched Asheville GO earlier this fall as a way to prepare out-of-school, unemployed youth for living-wage jobs in Asheville’s expanding green economy. Instead of charging participants tuition, Asheville GO pays them to complete projects that improve community and environmental health while providing technical job skills and work experience. Some service projects undertaken by the GO members this year included community gardening, living roof installation, ecosystem restoration, solar hot water heater installation, and weatherization of low-income households. The program also provides life-skills training, support services, mentoring, and academic instruction through AB Tech to equip its members with the tools they need to overcome barriers to employment.
