Babe-a-star Gallactica frackin’ rocked Friday night. Full of some tense moments and great acting, this episode stands as the perfect example of why I love the Battlestar.

One story line followed the return of Adama to the helm of the ship, back from the brink of death after cylon Boomer shot him. Edward James, as Adama, has become a master at building characters that are at once cold and commanding and vulnerable and touching. Just look at his reaction on the bridge to the president’s message, then the later scene of him crying over Boomer’s body.

The other major story line followed another compelling character, Starbuck, as she recovered from being wounded in a firefight. Watch her react with defiance, then searing sadness at the purported news of a friend’s death, then shamefaced rage at being confronted with past abuse.

And that was just half the episode. She also euthanized a friend and left a new boyfriend behind on a doomed planet. WOW. All these emotional moments were true and well-acted.

Sounds like my kind of series. Euthanized friends, abandoned boyfriends? I’ll have to wait for the DVD.
