twin_leaf_2013Construction on Twin Leaf Brewing, set to be Asheville’s newest craft  brewery when it opens next year, is getting underway down on the South Slope. The brewery will be on the corner of Banks Street and Coxe Avenue. The owners, Steph and Tim Weber, also report that Twin Leaf recently received the federal permission it needs to start brewing beer. Here’s an update from the Twin Leaf blog, posted Nov. 1:

We’ve been busy little bees over the last couple weeks gearing up for construction to begin. The main project going on in the building was the removal of a very large photography backdrop in the back corner of the space.

It wasn’t just the wall though. The whole floor in front of it was covered in tile and more fiberglass and evil. It took countless hours of chipping away to get rid of the stuff. Poor Tim. But, it’s finally gone! And now the space is ready for concrete cutting, plumbing, and other awesome stuff that will make it a brewery.

Aside from all this, I’ve been doing a million other things to get ready for this project to get started. Our plans are all finalized, we’re getting bids from subcontractors, and we’re working on a real schedule for the whole thing. We’ve decided on some important things like which polyurethane flooring we’re going with (Dur-A-Flex by Poly-Crete), which vendor will be installing our draft system, and the ever exciting building insurance.

We also had to figure out what type of water filtration we’re going to use. Not an easy question, as you have to balance up-front cost, maintenance cost, effectiveness, flow rate… And everyone has a different opinion about what’s best. But I think we’re going with a multi-stage cartridge filtration system. We mostly just need to get the chlorine out, and any organics that might be present in the water if we can. Good water = good beer.

Lots of other decisions still to be made. Lots of vendors to call. And actually, I’d better go write some emails now.

Construction starts soon. Very soon.
