From everything we’re hearing, Smilefest is dead this year. Tranysylvania County has put a hold on permitting any new "mass gatherings" while they work on a new ordinance that they won’t vote on until next month. So from everything we can tell, Smilefest is a goner.

Here’s the good news: in lieu of Smilefest, our beloved Avett Brothers will be playing the Asheville Music Jamboree along with a great line-up of other acts. The jamboree will be held June 2 at Deerfields Ampitheater in Mills River. Tickets on sale March 20. Go to www.amjam.net for more information.

Initial lineup includes The Avett Brothers, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Keller Williams and the WMDS, Donna the Buffalo, Acoustic Syndicate, and many others to be announced soon.

Due to heavy fan requests, look for several of these additions to be Avett/Ramseur family acts.

Deerfields hosted Smilefest 2005, and it’s beautiful. Two big ponds, car camping in an apple orchard, plenty of water-side and wooded campsites, it’s just great.
