More of what’s going around:
–Jasmine Beach-Ferrara, making her first run for political office, beat Asheville City Councilman Gordon Smith and a third challenger, Isaac Coleman, in the Democratic primary race for Buncombe County Board of Commissioners, District 1. Beach-Ferrara doesn’t have a Republican opponent on the ballot in November, which makes her the defacto winner. Beach-Ferrara, the head of the Campaign for Southern Equality, will be the first openly gay person to serve on the board.
-In other election news, Donald Trump won the Republican presidential primary in North Carolina, beating rivals Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, while Hillary Clinton bested Bernie Sanders on the Democratic side. In Buncombe County, the results were decidedly different: Cruz and Sanders won locally. I talked about it on WCQS this morning with David Hurand and Jeremy Loeb.
–Trade and Lore, the new coffee shop going in on Wall Street in downtown Asheville, is set to open this week. Former Waking Life barista Sarah Winkler, with business partners Lindsey Pitman, and Brock Kehoe, are the partners in the business.
–Brewgrass is holding a kick-0ff party from 6-9 p.m. on March 24 at Barley’s in downtown Asheville. The first 100 tickets to the Brewgrass beer festival in September will be sold for $20 a pop. DJ Kipper and a special tap-takover by New Belgium Brewing also highlight the party.
-The Mountain Sports Festival in Asheville announced its music line-up for this year’s event, set for May 27-19. The Marcus King Band, The Get Right Band, The Hip Abduction, Andrew Scotchie and the River Rats, The Digs, Devils & Dust and more are all on the bill.
–Native Kitchen in Swannanoa is now open on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and again from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
–Acropolis Pizza, a locally owned restaurant, is opening its second location at the Asheville Outlets food court. (The restaurant’s original location is on Airport Road.) The restaurant serves traditional Greek, Serbian and Mediterranean food, including salads, gyros, pasta and pizza.
–Restoration Hardware at Asheville Outlets just held a job fair this past weekend at the new store. The grand opening of the store is set for March 24.
