From Ashvegas commenter M Thompson. For context, the Biltmore McDonalds is not your ordinary fast food restaurant. (YouTube video here.) It’s design reflects the design of nearby Biltmore Village and is so unique that it’s become a tourist destination of its own:

Our daughter saw the Biltmore McDonalds on the Travel Channel and has been begging us to take her there. For Christmas we gave her Biltmore House tickets and dinner at McDonalds. She was so excited. Biltmore was a dream for her.  She has autism and little things mean the world to her. Espeically to travel. We went to McDonalds for dinner afterwards. So pretty with the fireplaces and grand piano.

To our disappointment, the service was so poor I wanted to leave, but, kept our promise.  We stood at the counter to order for some time while the girl at the cash register was texting. Then a friend of hers came up and was asking her out.  She then went back to texting.

I cleared my throat, she looked up from texting at me like what in the heck do you want, I’m busy here. I said, Would you mind taking our order. With a noticeable sigh, she said OK, what do you want?  It was so outrageous. I’m a southerner from SC my mom from NC and who wants to be treated like that?  It was not a nice experience for our daughter. I felt so bad for her.

Please get a manager and employees that CARE. I have been in SC Tourism for over 25 years. Please send me an application. I would be delighted to run and promote this beautiful place.

Thank you. Sincerely, Thompson family

The McDonald's in Weaverville is just as bad. Terrible, rude service by staff dressed in dirty, sloppy uniforms. Orders often filled wrong (missing/wrong items) in the drive through. Because they are a franchise, complaining to corporate gets you nothing except for offers of "free food." They totally miss the point. I don't mind paying for the food. I just want a little common decency while they fill my order accurately. I stopped going there a couple years ago.

On the other side of the coin, the Merrimon Ave McDonald's seems to try a little harder – maybe because they aren't as busy.

I was at the drive through one day and two managers started cussing each other out. Good times Good times.

As for the local places I always get stuck next to someone who is wearing patchouli. The food is over priced, someone brings their dog inside and the place is full of smelly hippies.

Oh and the people who work at those places look homeless and smell homeless.

Is a place really considered local when none of the workers or the owner are even from here? McDonalds is just as local.

I can say with absolute certainty my experience at this McDonalds has always been terrible. I refuse to go inside. Drive thru only customer for the last year. And.. I have walked out of Izzy's on Haywood twice now. Horrible. Just horrible service. Izzy's downtown has always been a good experience.

I miss Asheville like crazy, but I DON'T MISS ALL THE PEOPLE ON THEIR HIGH HORSES!!! And apparently half of them are illiterate too since they couldn't read the FIRST LINE before spewing their venom… or maybe they are just cold hearted. Go ahead, break her little heart by driving past the place she saw on TV and wanted to go. And the local restaurants are just as bad. Holier than thou attitudes… wait, maybe the people bashing her for not eating local are the same snobby people that work in these local restaurants. Of course, not all of them are bad, but this whole conversation reminds me a little bit about a kettle and a pot and some name calling. I agree that no matter where you decide to eat and spend your money, you should not get service like that, which is becoming more and more common.

Considering McDonalds' unwillingless to reduce the pain and suffering inflicted upon the animals they serve, why would anyone patronize this place?

Yep. The service, cleanliness, and quality of food at that McDonald's has been BAD for many, many years and so it has been marked off my list for about a decade. They may have changed the decor but that is not what needed to be changed.

For those who ask "It's McDonalds, what do you expect?" I, and probably this woman, expect service similar to other McDonalds in the county and throughout the nation.

Mrs. Thompson, I'm sorry your child's trip to the fancy McD's was a disappointment. I hope her tour of the house was (or will be) more satisfactory.

    Ms. Thompson
I've experienced a very similar slovenly attitude from the staff at that MickeyD's. To the point that I only occasionally frequent their drive thru and avoid their inside dining altogether. With their prime location, I'm certain other tourists to our mountains have unfortunately experienced the disgusting behavior and attitude as you and your daughter.
I suggest that our new Asheville Chamber of Commerce director take Ms. Thompson's experience, along with the experiences of those who have commented here, and share them with the McDonald's regional office.

Speaking of bad service at a locally-owned establishment, I got some very poor treatment by a woman working behind the counter at Izzy's on Haywood Road. If I recall, I asked a question about a bagel. I didn't understand her response and asked for clarification, which was met with an impatient, condescending expression. Some of my friends also have said this woman has given them attitude for no good reason. I just don't understand why people with miserable attitudes choose work that involves dealing with the public. If you don't like it, work somewhere else, just spare me and other paying customers your misery. By the way, Waking Life rules!!!

    M Thompson,
So sorry you had to experience what happens there every day.
Ordering food in that restaurant is an exercise in frustration.
A sense of urgency has never existed in that place.

In a time when jobs are hard to come by, I think employers can in this day and age require their employees to be more customer-oriented…regardless of how little they pay them.

@ gunboats: The lady stated her daughter had autism and was very interested in this particular McDonalds. As much as you and I would enjoy Mamacitas or Barley's or some other local establishment over McDonalds, I think treating her daughter to something she desired is more important.

Gunboats: I wonder what your post has to do with the letter written about bad service. Seems like your just trolling, so go back to the Citizen Times Site to spew your hate.

Local eateries are just as bad or even worse sometimes because of the people they employ. It happens everywhere and I have a feeling Asheville is more transplanted then southern anyway, but southern hospitality is always nice.

Did the trolley tour for asheville and saw the place, so our family said we'll have to stop on the way our of Biltmore too. Not only are they rude in that McDonald's, but it was so dirty. Didn't even order any food was too disgusted to eat there.

Stop it with the go-local crap. We get it…you hate chains. Obviously, you missed the point of a young autistic girl wanting this.

    To the point….couldn't agree more.

I live in Kenilworth and stop here occasionally for a quick coffee. Service here is TERRIBLE. Has been for years. Your story reminds me of many incidents I've had there.

gunboats, she went to that McDonald's because her daughter saw it on the Travel Channel and really wanted to go. It was in the e-mail. Did you see it? It's in the first sentence. FYI – she is implying Southerners have manners.

Agree with gunboats, if you want service and/or decent food why would you go to a McDonalds, regardless of the decor? I understand in this case it was your daughter's wish and that's great that you tried to make it happen for her, but I honestly can't fathom what precisely you were expecting from a place that barely pays its employees minimum wage? For $7 an hour they aren't compensated enough to care about you or anyone else.

I can say with absolute certainty that your experience is an exception and not a rule. I have been going to this McDonalds for over 10 years and I have never experienced a faster and more friendly group of people. I'm sure that I have clocked in hundreds of visits in my tenure as a customer and rarely have I gotten bad service. I frequently take one of my kids there for breakfast in the morning and the staff has given her free happy meal toys and drinks.

I'm sorry you didn't have the same experience that I consistently receive.

It's McDonalds. Go to a LOCAL business, maybe you'll get better service. And what does being a southerner have to do with anything?

Write the company and tell your story to the media. If more people would speak up about poor customer service maybe things would change. I'm one of the people that either speak up on the spot and demand service or I quietly sneak away and go home and email customer service. Either way I'm gonna make things right for the next customer.
