Look for Asheville tourism officials to put on the full-court press now to get the word out to tourists that it’s safe to drive your giant recreational vehicle or your gas-guzzling SUV into the mountains because we have gas.

The tourism industry is on the verge of taking a beating at the very start of leaf-peeping season, but I know the local tourism folks, and they’re not going to take this. Watch for a flurry of press releases, a barrage of television interviews, a crapload of e-mail to bloggers, all telling us that Asheville is a great place to visit!

Here’s what tourism officials should do: call for a “surge.” A surge of tourists. A surge of lost-looking octogenarians. A surge of free-spending Floridians.

We need a surge! If it worked for John McCain, it can work for Asheville!
