Asheville police ask for public’s help in finding motorist who hit cyclist on Airport Road

On 06/28/2012 at 2150 hrs Asheville Police received a call of a cyclist struck by vehicle on Airport Road. Marlon Dewayne Cleghorn was traveling south east on Airport Rd in the far right lane, on his bicycle. An unknown vehicle struck Cleghorn from behind and left the scene. Traffic Safety Unit was called out due to Cleghorn’s injuries. Cleghorn was transported to Mission Hospital where he is in serious but stable condition. Evidence left at the scene, indicated the suspect vehicle may possibly be a BMW. Investigation is still ongoing.

    While there is no excuse for hit and run, this stretch of road could really use enforcement of bike laws as well. I’ve seen several bikers (or the same biker several times possibly) have near misses along this stretch due to riding without a light and wearing dark clothing well after dark.
