Here’s my column, in today’s Asheville Citizen-Times, about FlyJBA. Above, you’ll see an example of the calendar application that’s being used by the upcoming Hatch festival. Below, an example of what an old calendar might look like (courtesy of UNCA’s regular submissions.) 

ART

Opens April 22 – “Missing Parts: The Fragmented Form,” exhibit of slab-built ceramics mixing abstract and human forms by Kevin Payne; culmination of his work toward a bachelor’s degree at UNC Asheville. Opening reception 6 p.m. Friday, April 22 in the Owen Hall 2nd Floor Gallery. Free and open to the public. On display 9 a.m.-6  p.m. weekdays, though May 3. Info: 251-6559.

Through April 22 – “Models of Sustainability in Craft Making” – features work by artists from EnergyXchange in Burnsville and the Jackson County Green Energy Park in Sylva, national environmental models where artists use national methane gas from adjacent landfills to fuel ceramic kilns, glass furnaces and blacksmithing workstations. UNC Asheville Center for Craft, Creativity & Design, 1181 Broyles Road, Hendersonville.  Free and open to the public. Gallery hours 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. April 23 – Blowers Gallery Exhibit: “Cracks, Doorways and Portals” – photography and poetry by Tracey Schmidt and Laurent Weisenberger. Blowers Gallery, in UNC Asheville’s Ramsey Library. Poetry writing class by Tracey Schmidt 1 p.m.; poetry reading and reception from 2-4 p.m. Free and open to the public. Exhibit open daily with free admission through April 26. April 25—Humanities Lecture—“Art of the Classical World” Alan Hantz, UNC Asheville chair and professor of mass communication, 11:25 a.m., Lipinsky Auditorium, UNC Asheville. Free and open to the public. Info: 828/251-6808.

Through May 3 –  The 44th Annual Juried Student Exhibition, produced by Art Front, UNC Asheville’s student art organization, and the UNC Asheville Art Department, with guest juror, metalsmith and sculptor Kate Silvio. Opening reception 6-8 p.m., with presentation of awards and scholarships at 6:30 p.m., UNC Asheville’s S. Tucker Cooke Gallery, Owen Hall, first floor, free and open to the public.  Exhibit on display 9 a.m.-6 p.m. weekdays. Info: UNC Asheville Art Department, 828/251-6559. 

BUSINESS/ECONOMY

April 21 – 27th Annual Economic Crystal Ball Seminar – the business and financial outlook for 2011 from economist David Berson and James Smith, 6:15 p.m. reception, presentations at 7 p.m., Q & A at 8 p.m., UNC Asheville’s Lipinsky Auditorium, free and open to the public, sponsored by UNC Asheville Economics Department and Parsec Financial.
