coxe_avenue_buildings_abccm_asheville_2015The donation center and thrift store run by Asheville-Buncombe Community Christian Ministry is still operational on Coxe Avenue in downtown Asheville despite the recent sale of two ABCCM buildings there. The two buildings at the bottom of Coxe Avenue on the booming South Slope sold recently for $1.4 million. East West Coxe LLC, a group of local investors that includes Mike Figura, David Moritz and Brian Nelson, purchased the property at 207 and 217 Coxe Ave. from Asheville-Buncombe Community Christian Ministry. ABCCM has operated a thrift shop out of 217 Coxe Ave. It has also operated a shelter out of 217 Coxe Ave. in recent years.

Here’s the press release from ABCCM, which wants folks to know they’re still on Coxe Avenue for the next couple of months:

The Donation Center and Thrift Store owned by Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry at 217 Coxe Avenue will remain open for at least the next two months following the sale of that building.

The Thrift Store is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. The Donation Center is open from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Friday and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday.

ABCCM is currently looking for new locations for the Donation Center and Thrift Store, the sites of which will be announced at a later date.

The Thrift Store provides furniture, clothing and household items at no charge for Crisis Ministry clients with vouchers, and to the general public at reduced prices. All proceeds go back to ABCCM to support those in need with services such as utility assistance and prescription medications. The Donation Center accepts items brought to 217 Coxe Avenue and also picks up items when scheduled in advance.

In 2014, nearly 56 volunteers served 4,372 hours at the Donation Center. The Thrift Store serves as a training site where residents of the ABCCM Veterans Restoration Quarters and Steadfast House can learn retail sales skills and warehouse management to prepare for employment.

The 217 Coxe Avenue location and an ABCCM warehouse location at 207 Coxe Avenue were recently sold to East West Coxe LLC.

This is very sad news. The benefit of having these services downtown was that folks to access them easily. Asheville is just sweeping all traces of it’s true residents’ plight under the rug. Soon they will all be invisible. I guess the reality astronomical rent and home costs combined with dirt low wages don’t draw the tourists in as much! This organization has served a lot of people and I hope that they find a great new spot to render services to the people in this city who really need them.
