There really wasn’t much local news on WLOS Sunday night. With Russ Bowen at the anchor desk, Russ threw it over to Kassandra Pride, who said that neighbors of Irene and John Bryant “find new hope” in the fact that Gary Hilton is a suspect in their murder/disappearance.
The Bryants went missing in October. Irene Bryant was found dead in Pisgah National Forest, and her husband remains missing. Hilton has been charged with killing a woman found dead in a north Georgia forest, and police around the country and trying to link him to similar killings.
So WLOSers milked that story, then went to some file tape of John Tabor, Hilton’s old boss who helped police find him.
The only other local story i heard was about Bill Inman, who has been riding around America on horseback. zen has a photo of him here, riding through West Asheville.
There was also a new weather-guesser. Karen Wynne stood in for Lisa Rodriguez, who was pretty bad. Wynne did an OK job. Russ didn’t introduce her, so who knows if she’s another part-timer or the next regular weekend weather-soothsayer.
Looks like Wynne most recently worked at WCHS-TV in West Virginia.
Here’s a little bit about her, from her former station’s web site:
I moved here from another “friendly” place-El Paso, Texas-where I was the morning/noon meteorologist for KDBC-TV. Since severe weather is very rare out there, I also anchored the morning cut-ins and co-hosted the noon show. We often did stories on the water shortage there. So what happens? I arrive in Charleston just in time for the May 2004 floods-too much of a good thing! But, as a meteorologist, I welcome the challenge-and am enjoying the beautiful scenery here.
As for my weather background, I am honored to hold seals of approval from both the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association. I have the Certificate of Broadcast Meteorology from Mississippi State University. My B.S. is in Telecommunication from The University of Florida — what a year it’s been for my Gators!
My parents still live in the house where my sister and I grew up in South Florida. My husband is a Texan and grew up an “air force brat.” Even though his family moved frequently, he never lived in the eastern U.S. until now. We are both enjoying West Virginia very much. Our daughter is seven, and thriving in the second grade. We are happy to have the opportunity to raise her in such a family-friendly place!
Here’s Karen’s resume.
You have to watch a brief ad, but you can watch a video of Karen delivering the weather in this WLOS video report.
Larry welcomed Karen tonight on the 6
russ introduced saturday night
Karen’s permanent, Rodriguez was a temp until Wynne was hired.
I think Karen and Julie are the best. They do a great job.
Hurrah for Karen! Sounds like everyone approves. Thanks for your comments, y’all.
Hi Ash,
I actually was awake for the Saturday morning show and Charu introduced Karen as the new weekend meteorologist. I agree, she is much better than Lisa.
Lisa was the fill in until Karen was hired.
I liked Karen Wynne as well. Beats when Julie Blunder was doing it!!
Let’s hope she’s permanent. She’s pretty good, at least compared to most of the the weekend weather guessers they’ve had in the last 20 years (with the notable exception, of course, of Bob Child and the brief weekend stint of Bettes before he and the Goob got switched).
