Apartment fire
There was a fire at the Meadows Apartments in West Ashvegas. Russ “Beefcake” Bowen covered the story.

Russ said 10 Ashvegas families have been left homeless by the fire, which started on a lower level in the apartment of a Meadows Apartments employee. There was lots of smoke, but everybody got out. Firefighters said they had to take two people out through windows and down ladders. Russ talked to some scared old ladies.

Haywood house fire
Firefighters out in Haywood County were battling a blaze off Chestnut Mountain Road, WLOSers said. No details.

Pedestrian killed
A 45-year-old woman walking along Highway 19/23 near Candler was hit by a pick-up and killed. No word on charges.

Dogs seized
Larry “Gloryhold” Blunt said deputies seized 56 dogs from a home on Ridgeway Road in Buncombe County. Some dogs were dehydrated. The dogs were taken to shelters to be cared for. No more details.

Bush speech
WLOSers talked to two 20-something women who have just joined the Army. They watched President Bush talk about his plan for the war in Iraq. Both said they knew when they signed up that they could end up in Iraq.

Warm weather means low heating bills
Carolyn “Little Red” Ryan, dressed appropriately for once, told us the obvious – that warm weather means lower heating bills.

Ryan went out and got some pretty pictures and talked to people who were glad to be saving money on power bills. She also went to Lowe’s, where they’ve got 50 percent off all heating equipment.
