From WLOS and reporter Karen Wynne:

It’s a bittersweet Valentines Day for a local landmark greeting cards store.  Cherie’s Hallmark at River Ridge in Asheville is closing tomorrow.  Today, loyal customers came to visit the owner and employees, and to take advantage of final sales.  The store opened in the mid 80’s.  Owner Al Richie says the last 3 years have been very tough, economically.  He says he tried to sell the store, but could not, so closing was the best option.

It may not be news to everyone. However, it was devastating news to my mother and others who have worked there nearly as long as the store has been open and are now without jobs.

This would be — and is — news in Asheville and many other small towns and cities. A store that's been around for a quarter of a century and is now shutting down: that's news. And bad news, at that. My wife loves to shop there when we make it into east Asheville.

J&S Cafeterias, fine dining, Asheville style. Yum!

OMG! Such devastating news…a pillar of the local economy is closing. Only in Asheville would this be news.
