More of what’s going around:

-Wicked Weed Brewing has made two $100,000 donations to Eblen Charities, according to the latest Eblen Charities newsletter. This is the latest in a series of community donations that Wicked Weed has made to local community organizations. The YMCA of WNC, Brother Wolf Animal Rescue and Pisgah Legal Services have each received $50,000 donations over about the past week. The donations come on the heels of last month’s announcement that Anheuser-Busch InBev would acquire Wicked Weed. The beer giant has been strategically buying up smaller craft brands over the past few years.

Here’s more from the Eblen Charities newsletter:

It has been an exciting past couple of weeks and in the midst of all our events and planning for the fall, we are happy and honored to announce a most generous donation that will help us continue to touch the lives of tens of thousands of families who are facing difficult times and have nowhere else to turn.

This month, founding board member Rick Guthy and Wicked Weed presented Eblen Charities with two checks for $100,000 each. One is to continue their employee assistance program which assists their employees who are in need of help and facing difficult times. The second program takes the concept of their employee assistance program and expands its outreach to help families in our community facing troubled times and in need help. The Wicked Weed Help at Home Emergency Assistance Program is a unique partnership between Wicked Weed and Eblen Charities that will not only enhance the emergency assistance outreach of Eblen Charities but will create a new program and offer new opportunities for Eblen and Wicked Weed to serve the community and reach out to those who find themselves battling illnesses, disabilities, or are in times of need.

“Wicked Weed Brewing is honored to be partnering with Eblen Charities in establishing the Help at Home Emergency Assistance Program. The ownership of Wicked Weed Brewing has been very involved with Eblen Charities for more than 20 years and we have always been so grateful for what this organization has meant to the local community,” states Rick Guthy of Wicked Weed. “They continue to humbly and diligently serve our neighbors in need…and somehow, someway find new ways to assist and give wherever and whenever needed. Eblen Charities is definitely a lifeline to many and Wicked Weed Brewing is excited to help launch this new Eblen program.”

-The Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority will meet this week to consider funding a new river blueway and greenway project that includes a whitewater wave feature to be built along the French Broad River in Woodfin.

-Rod Harkleroad, CEO of Haywood Regional Medical Center, and Maurice Phillips, chairman of the hospital’s board, have released a statement explaining their opposition to new health care legislation working its way through the U.S. House and Senate. Here’s a snippet:

Specifically, the House AHCA, as it stands, will have catastrophic effects on families, children, elderly and disabled individuals who depend on our hospital for care. It is projected to leave 23 million Americans without access to affordable healthcare coverage – many of whom live right here in western North Carolina. Without coverage, many of these community members will be left without access to the healthcare services they need to live healthy and productive lives. The bill could also mean significant jobs lost in both our hospital and community. Total job losses across the country could total nearly one million, with 41,000 in our state alone. And these effects will undoubtedly ripple into our community. The overall impact of the AHCA on our local economy would be devastating and felt for many years to come.

Attached is an op-ed written by Rod Harkleroad, CEO of Haywood Regional Medical Center, and Maurice Phillips, Chairman of Haywood Regional Medical Center Board. It shares their insights regarding current healthcare reform legislation and the conversations happening across the country around healthcare. 23 million fewer people with coverage, accompanied by a tax break for the wealthy. Many of those newly-uninsured folks will be here in WNC. And yet those of us in District 11 are still sending Mark Meadows back for multiple terms in the House. Knee-jerk conservatism at its finest.

Center for American Progress estimates 76,900 out of the 620,000 people in NC District 11 (one in eight) will lose their health insurance if Trumpcare is enacted. Well, at least those billionaires will get their tax cuts…Thanks, Mark Meadows!
