The Orange Peel has broken through by hosting the nine-show residency of the reunited Smashing Pumpkins. That begs the question – who’s next?

Who would you like to see? Who might be likely to come for an extended stay?

How about Dave Matthews? Well, he already hangs out quite a bit in Ashvegas. No. We need somebody with a buzz factor, somebody that would bring people to Ashvegas from the world over, somebody you’d be surprised to see in Asheville.

Prince? He recently announced a residency somewhere. That would be frackin’ cool. Who else? Maybe No Doubt? They’re back in the studio.

Amy Winehouse, if she wasn’t drunk all the time. REM. Bruce Springsteen. Kanye. The Dixie Chicks. Alicia Keys. Bon Jovi, country edition. John Mayer.

maybe the orange peel should make more of an effort to showcase some of the smaller asheville bands that don’t necessarily fit into their booking criteria and not concentrate on multi-day "residencies".

don’t get me wrong, i love it when the orange peel gets good bands of some reknown (the fact that they were able to get seven of my all-time favorite bands to play there in the first couple of years it was open was a pretty amazing feat, but i’m pretty sure that was due to the old management). but if they keep toeing the corporate line and eschewing the seemingly endless pool of local talent, they might as well just slap a house of blues logo on the front of the building and call it a day.

i would share your enthusiasm about this whole smashing pumpkins thing if it were, say, 1991, back when they were just a rock band. and a pretty decent one as well. i’ve talked some trash about the pumpkins on occasion, but i really can’t completely badmouth a band that recorded a song like "rhinoceros" (from their first album, "gish").
