What’s happening out West

By out West, we mean West Asheville.

Well, a couple of things. First off, the annual West Fest street party here on Haywood Road, which in the past was held in June, totally died this year without hardly a peep from anyone. What’s up with that? Yeah, it was hot as hell. And yeah, everybody’s saving up their party mode for Bele Chere, but damn. West Asheville needs its own funky party. Lexington Ave has its. We need ours. From what we’ve read, there was just a lack of volunteers this year.

C’mon, Haywood Roadies. Get your act together. Make it happen for ’08, kay?

The other thing we noticed along Haywood Road was the Got Root? sign up above the abandoned gas station just past the Ingles. As y’all know, the classic Root Bar out in Swannanoa plans to open a Root Bar 2 in the Haywood Road space. So far, though, there’s been little action.

Finally, there was a rumor that an organic cafe was in the works for the West Asheville food-coop. Anybody know if that’s happening? The food co-op here is a little weak. They need to do something to keep up.

Ashvegas is still live blogging from the Westville Pub. Come by and say hello.

I think the organic cafe at Haywood Road Market has come and gone, along with the ice cream counter and a couple other add-on ventures. Five years later and the market is still trying to find its niche. It seems to be trying too hard to be a one-stop shop a la the downtown co-op, but the space there just isn’t big enough. I stop in on occasion, but the prices are generally too high.
