Press release here:

ASHEVILLE – West Riverside Operation Weed & Seed (WROWS) is awarding contracts of up to $5,000 each for programs that provide accessible youth services, increase parent involvement, improve health and nutrition, increase job readiness or contribute to neighborhood restoration. The service area includes, but is not limited to, the Pisgah View and Burton Street communities. Funds will be available for activities and programs taking place between May 4, 2009 and May 1, 2010. Applications are due Friday, Feb. 13, 2009.

Eligible applicants include non-profit organizations with 501 c (3) status, faith-based organizations, schools, and community-based groups with a fiscal agent.

A mandatory orientation will be held from 6-7 p.m. Jan. 22 at Burton Street Community Center, 134 Burton St., or from noon-1 p.m. Jan. 23 at Pisgah View Community Center, 1 Granada St.

WROWS is a community-driven strategy that focuses on creating safer, healthier neighborhoods through collaborative efforts. The initiative addresses quality of life comprehensively by “weeding” out harmful elements in a community like drug trafficking and violence while “seeding” the community with positive sustainable support.

Contact Dawa Hitch at 258-2813 or[email protected] to RSVP for the mandatory orientation.
