Word on the street is that Lionsgate folks have been scouting Western North Carolina for film locations for the upcoming remake of Dirty Dancing. No word yet if any of the film will be shot around here. Fans of the movie will recall that the original was filmed around Lake Lure back in the 1980s.

There’s also this, from Variety:

Lionsgate has tapped “Glee” co-creator Brad Falchuk to rewrite Maria Maggenti’s screenplay for “Dirty Dancing,” a musical reimagining inspired by the popular 1987 pic starring Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze.

The remake will incorporate classic songs from the 1960s, hits from the original film and brand new compositions.

“High School Musical” helmer Kenny Ortega, the original film’s choreographer, will direct as well as produce with Debra Martin Chase (“The Princess Diaries”). Eleanor Bergstein, who wrote and co-produced the original pic, will also be involved in a producing and consulting capacity.

The movie is scheduled to be released in July 2013, according to Variety. Lionsgate, btw, is still riding high from The Hunger Games, which had scenes shot around Asheville last summer.
