burners_and_bbq_2014West Asheville’s The Odditorium and The Mothlight will play host to a Labor Day weekend festival that celebrates graffiti, street art and its creators. The event is called Burners and BBQ.

There will be music, food, beer and artists at work. Check out the poster above for details. Here are a few updates from the event FB page that offers a few more details:

GUS from CBS and LORDS and The Fly Lord himself big FOWLER getting down all Labor Day weekend at B&B!!!

New Jerusalem’s own KEMOS from CBS and Mayhem crews is gonna be rocking with us all weekend at the Odditoreum wall. Come through Sunday the 31st between Noon and Nightfall and see how a true King gets down!

ATL’s Perve from TM7 and WST crews will be showing art at the Satellite Gallery show Friday the 29th and painting live at the Odditoreum wall all Labor Day weekend! He has a fondness for strong drink so buy him a round and hear some crazy stories from a true Wild Style Technician…

We are also proud to announce that SORROW ONE from UM and IDC crews is going to be painting live and showing at the Gallery as well!!!

Luke Sick from the legendary Bay Area hip hop group Sacred Hoop will be playing at The Mothlight in West Asheville on Saturday, August 30th as part of the events for Burners and Barbecue this year. Other acts include TOPR, Foul Mouth Jerk, Fist Fam, Al Lover and more! Check out this classic Hoop video with fellow Gurp City representative Z-Man..

It’s my understanding that street artists will be painting this wall next to The Odditorium in West Asheville all weekend. Goona be fun. From the FB event page: “Ishmael and TRek6 finished the initial background for the main wall today. This is just the beginning!”burnersbbq1

I don’t even know what the hell I’m reading:

Sounds like a bunch of crap.

“celebrate graffiti”? How about, “Public discussion of the fine line between public art and glorified vandalism” or “discussion of the tension between vandalism, unwelcome art, and the need for creative expression and voice for the disadvantaged.”

Graffiti is as much an invasive weed as it is an art form. It would be nice to see the public art community take some responsibility for this double edged sword.

Sounds like an out and out endorsement of vandalism to me.

Hopefully APD will show up and grab a gaggle of punks who consider property damage to be art.
