I posted this because I think this just looks like a ton of fun. Just look at the elements: an under-the-water-themed costume party, complete with photo booth and props; a music video featuring a mustachioed sailor and a flirtatious mermaid; and a killer Asheville band, The Moon and You, described as “a touring acoustic duo that ‘blends cello and guitar to craft folk music with a 1970’s singer-songwriter feel in the vein of Joan Baez or Harry Nilsson. Together they make tender songs that feel like a warm homemade blanket,’ says Brian Tucker of the Wilmington Star News Online.
And you have The Mothlight in West Asheville as venue. Get some. Here’s the full press release:
The Moon & You is hosting a costume party on Saturday, Nov. 22 at The Mothlight to celebrate the release of their first-ever official music video, “The Rolling Baby Blanket of the Blue.” The video was made in the Philadelphia studio of visual artist Samantha Hyman, in September of this year. The multi-talented artist played several important roles in the video’s creation: she is credited as set designer, costume designer and prop designer, and even took a captivating turn onscreen as a flirtatious, big-haired mermaid.
The video was conceptualized by The Moon & You’s core members Ryan Furstenberg and Melissa Hyman (who is, surprisingly, not related to Samantha). Both bandmates appear onscreen, playing a stormcloud and a mustachioed sailor, respectively. According to Hyman, “all of the sets, costumes and props were created from scratch over the course of four 12-to15-hour days in the studio. Then the video was shot in one day by videographer Caitlin McCann of Dog Days Studios, based in New York City. It was a labor of love, and an exciting peek into the world of the working visual artist. We loved spending all day painting and hot-gluing things.”
The video’s old-school special effects (e.g. stop-motion animation, puppetry) were inspired by early French filmmaker Georges Méliès, whose style also inspired the music video for the Smashing Pumpkins’ “Tonight, Tonight.”
In keeping with the playful, DIY aesthetic of the entire project, the Nov. 22 video release party will feature an under-the-sea-themed costume contest and a photo booth stocked with backdrops and props used in the video’s creation. Of course, the highlight of the event will be the world-premiere screening of The Rolling Baby Blanket of the Blue.
No Asheville party is complete without live music, and this one has it in spades: Stephen Murray and Kevin Williams of Holy Ghost Tent Revival kick things off with a duo set, The Moon & You and friends will play a few in the middle, and then high-energy, VA-based swing/rockabilly/western outfit The Judy Chops close out the event with a dance party.
To recap: a $7 ticket gets you admission to the world-premiere screening of The Rolling Baby Blanket of the Blue, three great bands, costume contest with fabulous prizes, and Gary Reckard’s magical undersea photo booth. Light snacks will be provided as well. Don your tentacles and your dancing shoes, ladies and gents – this promises to be a titanically delightful night out.
