The Odditorium

The Get Down bar on Haywood Road has closed and a new bar called The Odditorium has taken over.

The Get Down closed on Dec. 31 and work to renovate the interior décor has been underway, according to a woman who answered the phone at the bar but declined to give her name. The bar will reopen Tuesday as The Odditorium to honor some performance dates that bands had booked with The Get Down, she said. Beer, wine and liquor will still be for sale, and there will be plenty of music.

The Odditorium will be “an oddities bar for the pecular children of Asheville,” said the woman. Aside from getting a new coat of paint and some other infrastructure updating, the bar will eventually feature displays of unusual items from the world over, oddities such as vintage autopsy tools, a miner’s canary cage and a classic ventriloquist’s doll. The plan is to close the bar again the last week of March to install the new displays.

Think Ripley’s Believe It or Not meets a vintage carnival freakshow, the woman said. Stay tuned for more
