Some of what’s going around:

-On the economy: The Economic Development Coalition for Asheville-Buncombe County is holding its annual meeting on Thursday, and promises plenty of updates and some news: “an exciting new technology company announcement.” The meeting starts at 8 a.m. at the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce.

-Real estate woes: The Asheville Citizen-Times reports that foreclosures in Buncombe County are on pace to reach record highs.

-The Asheville Humane Society is preparing for a big move. From a press release:

Asheville Humane Society is closing the old shelter, located at 72 Lee’s Creek Road, on Tuesday, August 31st at 5 p.m. This closing is required to safely and effectively prepare the transport of animals into the new facilities.

AHS will re-open at the Animal Care Campus on Tuesday, September 7th.  We are excited to announce the new address and phone/fax number for AHS: 14 Forever Friend Lane; Asheville, NC 28806/ Phone: 828-761-2001/ Fax: 888-607-7312. The new address and phone numbers are effective starting Sept. 7.

One question: Who still uses a fax these days?

-Now hiring: The Mountain Xpress is looking to hire a webmaster

-Development moves ahead: The Larchmont development project off Merrimon Avenue in North Asheville is moving ahead after securing tax credits it needed. Meantime, the Stop Larchmont folks continue their drumbeat.

-Music alert: One of my favorite local bands, Johnson’s Crossroad, is playing Friday at Jack of the Wood. These guys, with their Americana/bluegrass sound and Paul Johnson’s gravelly voice, are a must-see. They release their debut album, Blood in Black and White, earlier this year. Amelia’s Mechanic, a new fave, plays Jack of the Wood on Saturday.

I love the comment "I highly recommend jumping on this. It won't last long." This ad has been on Xpress' website for a while now (by a while I mean at _least_ a month)
