Asheville police have arrested and charged a man with rape following a woman’s report that she was sexually assaulted in West Asheville.

Police responded to Mauricet Lane off Louisiana Avenue about 1:53 a.m. on July 27 following the report of a rape, according to a police report. The location is in the new Craggy Park subdivision in what’s known as the Falconhurst neighborhood of West Asheville.

Officers met with the victim, who told police that she started her night at The Brew Pump on Haywood Road and consumed two beverages, but couldn’t remember much after that, according to the report. “The next thing the victim remembers is waking up in Craven Park with her some of her belongings missing,” the report states.

Police viewed security camera video which shows the woman at Brew Pump, alone and apparently acting normally, according to a source, who says the woman continued her night with other stops at restaurants/bars along Haywood Road.

After an investigation, police arrested and charged 20-year-old Justice Tyrek James of Asheville with second-degree forcible rape and resisting arrest. Additional charges are forthcoming, according to a police spokeswoman.

James is currently being held in the Buncombe County Detention Facility under a $250,000.00 secure bond, according to police.
