Last week, the drama between WLOS owners Sinclair and the cable provider Mediacom came to a head with a Dec. 1 deadline. The two agreed to extend the deadline to Jan. 5, an interesting date well get to in a minute.

The two companies are fighting over money, of course. Sinclair Mediacom pays Mediacom Sinclair a fee to carry its stations’ programming. In the mountains around Ashvegas, there are Mediacom subscribers in Henderson and McDowell counties, as well as out in Macon and Jackson counties.

Sinclair and Mediacom can’t come to agreement, and WLOSer were all over the story, ticking down the hours until they potentially could be off the air in the communities. Funny how WLOSers made is all about WLOS being off the air. They quoted dumb people, who all said they would _have no idea what was going on in their communities and neighborhoods if it weren’t for WLOS. Lord help us.

WLOSers told people how to put an antenna on their television to get their signal over the air. They ran Direct TV commercials to tell people how to sign up for satellite TV. Then they moved the deadline to Jan. 5, a convenient date considering that the college football bowl season is nearly upon us, and will be over Jan. 5.

Attention all Mediacom customer – we know you need help. As the Disclaimer rightly put it in a headline: Mediacom customers wondering who will read them the Citizen-Times when WLOS goes off the air.*

Well, Ashvegas is here to serve. As you see, we blog the WLOSer news. It’s news with an edge, folks. We’ve have fun. And at Ashvegas, you’ll get context and understanding you’ll never see on teevee. So come hang out with us.

I should start reading the Onion so I know which stories I’ve been ripping off from them. Why does the Onion have to always beat me to the punch on Asheville City Council jokes? Thanks for the tip! And to think we had the audacity to steal jokes the most widely read satirical newspaper on the planet and pass them off as our own for five years, thinking that nobody in illiterate ol’ Asheville would ever notice and call us on it. We never expected anyone to put two and two together but now the jig is up! Thanks for cracking the case!

Actually, Ash, Mediacom pays Sinclair to carry the WLOS signal. Mediacom believe the amount Sinclair wants to carry the WLOS signal is too much and unfair.

Ummm…actually, Mediacom pay SINCLAIR. Not the other way around.

Sinclair is hoping to get about 40 million for its next contract, and Mediacom is trying to talk that number down.

But Cable companies ALWAYS pay for content. Not Vice Versa.
