How can you bury big news even when you lead your infotainmentcast with it? Well, did you see WLOSers at 6? They led with a story about a brush fire that they said burned 10 homes to the ground, but just glossed over it and moved on. Whaaaa?

The fire started about 4:15 p.m. in the Grassy Branch area of Swain County, said WLOSer Russ “Beefcake” Bowen, who thinks we’re mean. Grow up, Russ. He said there’s an emergency shelter that’s been set up at a local church, and more news at 11.

Looking for a body
WLOSer Kassandra “Special K” Pride said officials are looking for the body of Steve Medford, a Waynesville man who went fishing on a Kentucky lake a week ago and hasn’t been seen since. Special K said the Navy is joining the search.

Breaking news…
Russ clears his throat. We heard it.

In other news…
Somebody was injured in a motorcyle wreck somewhere on Saturday… The Polk County deputy who was run down trying to stop a suspected drunk driver awhile back is doing better… WLOSer Mike “Cuervo” Cuevas was doing the weather-guessing on Sunday. He said it will get into the 70s on Tuesday and Wednesday… A Graham County deputy charged with stealing a bullet-proof vest will have a first appearance in court on Monday, WLOSers said. The deputy is also accused of using pot and meth on while on the job… The Smoky Mountain High School girls basketball team came home to a hero’s welcome after winning a state basketball championship on Saturday – film at 11… And there was a country chorus recital at Tuscola High School today that everybody loves.

Blogs can afford to cover the same thing over and over, and in most cases just combine all the info from TV and Print sources in the area.

Or just have random people e-mail them with new information.

The problem is, in TV you have to have credible sources. Annoynmous e-mailer is not a credible source.

Take away reader sent info…and most are nothing but borderline plagurizing the local print and broadcast news.

Key phrase there is "in charge". People pitch great stories all day, but sex and violence kills content everytime.

My, my that was a bit snippy there.
Whew, have we all sobered up/come down/stopped trippin yet?
As far as Jack Daniels comment, I find a little truth there.

Look around and see how the blogs have covered the Woodfin Power Plant compared with print and TV… no comparison, and they do it with NO budget.

There is news out here, just no one in charge wants it covered.

Ash calls it like it is…when it suits him.

But when he gets called out for being wrong…suddenly that topic stops taking comments…LOL

God I love to blog. Blog this, News here in the mountains sucks. From radio to the TV to the newspaper. It just SUCKS! There may be some good individual efforts, but not one media outlet is good. No one understands teamwork and what impact that can have on coverage! All you have in the mountains is a bunch of semi-celebrities that get treated like their the local movie star or the big time writer (columnist). Put the public first people and stop worrying about what your hair looks like, or when your gonna get that next book deal. More advice to come after the second drink!

There were a couple different brush fires mentioned by WLOS on Sunday, both at the top of the show at 11. I think they even got a helicopter ride to get some video of one.

Very mature, whatever. I know for a fact that it was updated. And, more than the headline was updated. But, think what you want.

no you’re wrong they updated the headline but not the content. it stayed with the same info about what they heard on scanner traffic until late in the evening. so f-off.

Ash is one mean guy. Once he called it like it was with me and it hurt my feelings. Then I realized it was a fair assesment of my work. From that very day, I worked hard on improving and now I am able to say that Ash doesn’t call me that "mo’fo, crazy ass Catnap" anymore. Thank you Ash for helping me improve.

Tom and whatever – you should have checked out the C-T site again. They had the Bryson City fires on the site at 5:10 p.m., and it was updated throughout the evening (last update to one story was 10:45 p.m. and then it was on the site at midnight.) So, even though they "led" with the supermarket wars, they had the fire story – with a lot of details – while WLOS briefly mentioned it.

Hey Ash…you said "The Polk County deputy who was run down trying to stop a suspected drunk driver awhile back…", but didn’t say what about him. Did WLOS not say anything about him either? Heheh 🙂

At least WLOS is cutting in and alerting their viewers, If someone were to go the newspapers website at 10:55pm, Super Market Wars is still your main top story, all of this happened at 5pm, its 6 hours later, Jason, your a freakin editor at the citizen-times which means you make the decisions, what the hell are you doing tonight other than bashing WLOS.

Ashvegas, you should be proud of your meanness. Most journalists are a little mean. By the way, don’t stand in front of Ashvegas’ lens in public; he will make a face at you. Not exactly a nice face either! I’m with Russ B; I think you are a little mean, but that OK, you’re just doing your jobs. By the way, a professional photographer would shrug it off and move on to the next shot. You should learn that from steve and john at your newspaper, they could teach you.

They still had more on at six than the great Citizen Times did all night on the web. So if you’re going to call the media out why don’t you share it.
