A chunk of riverfront property along the French Broad River sold this week for $1 million, property records filed at the Buncombe County Register of Deeds show.

The buyer is listed at 86 Landlord LLC. The registered agent of that company is Ben Mixson, co-owner (with Laura Reuss) of the popular White Duck Taco restaurant chain, which was born and bred in Asheville. Mixson has declined to comment on the move.

The location at 444 Riverside Drive is the former home of Asheville Auto Auction and just up Riverside from Smoky Park Supper Club restaurant. The property, which in recent years has been home to junk cars and a couple of structures, is just north of the Norfolk Southern Railroad train trestle that cross Riverside.

White Duck Taco’s original location, which opened back in 2011, is nearby on Roberts Street. Since then, White Duck has opened locations in Columbia, Charleston and Greenville, S.C., Johnson City, Tenn., and in downtown Asheville and south Asheville.

Riverside Drive is a hot area for development these days. A 2-mile section of the road will see significant infrastructure improvements as part of a multi-million project to realign the road, relocate utilities and add roundabouts and sidewalks.
