russ_bowen_2013As we reported last month, WLOS anchor Russ Bowen is leaving the station for a new job as the weekend anchor at KOMO-TV in Seattle. In his honor, Mayor Terry Bellamy has proclaimed today as Russ Bowen Day.

His co-worker Julie Wunder blogs about his leaving: Farewell and good luck Russ!

You probably have already heard, but Asheville is losing one of it’s finest. My dear friend and colleague Russ Bowen is leaving us to work in Seattle. He snagged an awesome job as the weekend anchor at KOMO. I am so proud of him!

Russ has been one of my closest friends since we anchored the weekend show at WLOS many years ago. Through good times and bad, I always knew he was the kind of friend I could call on, at any hour, with a helping hand or a good laugh. He is even responsible (along with our good friend Silvio) for introducing me to my husband. How can I ever thank him for that!

Russ’s last official day at work is Friday, but we all wished him farewell at a party last Saturday night.

Ashvegas wishes WLOS’ best anchor the best of luck in his new position in Seattle.

Julies out of sick days. Don’t forget she was off the air for a couple of months just recently with a sore throat. Time to consider a weather blog where she doesn’t talk.

Rus was the closest thing to an anchor Asheville has ever had. Rock on darcel.

Bowen is a fine journalist and has lent ear to thousands of important stories over the years. His honed craft and storytelling style has earned him 9 Emmy Awards and 4 NC AP Awards. He is fair and good at his job, as government officials on both sides of the aisle have declared. And as if that weren’t enough, @ashevillemomma, Seattle is a top-tier television news market and very difficult to enter into. I mean, even Ashevegas loves the guy!

Some here wish we could say ‘good riddance’ to the type of ill-informed ‘pathetic’ ‘intoning’ from such negative-nancies as @ashevillemomma. It takes more than merely posting on local news blogs to be active and productive in a community. Something Russ Bowen has no problem of accomplishing.

Bowen embarrassed himself irreparably during the broo-ha-ha over the Aiport Board’s trip to the national conference in Hawaii. Each night he would put on his serious face and intone the latest as if he were breaking a Watergate-scale scandal, and he called in to Matt Mittan’s radio show to darkly suggest that “law enforcement may become involved”. Pathetic.

Good riddance. Hope they teach you something about real journalism in Seattle. It takes more than having the right amount of product in your hair and wearing hip glasses.
