It’s unclear whether these people were jumped or were pushed, but word on the street is that several people are out at Clear Channel Asheville. And WWNC has issued a statement today that popular talk radio show host Matt Mittan and the station have parted ways. Here’s the official statement from the station.

The New York Times reports that Clear Channel dismissed dozens of local DJs this week around the country, at large stations and small.

UPDATE: I’m also hearing that Agnes Cheek, Matt Mittan’s on-air sidekick, is not at Clear Channel any more. Also Doug Mayer, who reported and read on-air news, is no longer there. Mayer is a former colleague of mine at the Asheville Citizen-Times.

Please let us know when you will resurface, hopefully in a similar capacity while at 570 so I can re program my smart phone to receive your show. Take a Stand and later, The Matt Mittan Show really gave me a sense of connection and belonging to my community. I travel quite a bit throughout the country and always looked forward to Matt's show at 3 PM eastern no matter what state I was in at the time.

I hope you both reappear in a similar venue soon.

What a terrible loss. The community has lost an advocate for the discussion of what is "right", not Left or Right, but right and wrong with any given topic/issue. The theories will fly, but I hope someday soon the TRUTH will be provided regarding his dismissal/leaving. What a crime it would be if there were any substance regarding the "powers that be" (political and/or corporate) removing him because of information that he made public. Matt, I used to listen to you as much as possible and I wish you well. Hopefully you will remain "local" so that all of your listeners will be able to hear you again.

I agree that it is suspicious how so much PR money has been spent pushing the sales tax increase (indicating the powers-that-be are REALLY anxious to pass it) and how this local media scuffle immediately follows some of Mr. Mittan's most scathing criticism and exposure of local politics related to the issue.

Conspiracy theory? Grow up. This is how things work in the new America.

Why is it so complicated for Matt to just explain why he's no longer at WWNC? So far, the obvious/stated conclusions are:
    * Agnes quit, and then Matt quit too seconds before he was going to be let go anyhow.
    * Agnes was fired, and Matt quit on principal.
    * WWNC was trying to "silence" Matt, so he and Agnes quit.
    * WWNC asked Matt not to talk about certain subjects relating to advertisers (which he said on WLOS interview), then they fired Agnes separately, then Matt quit on behalf of Agnes, and also because they were trying to silence him.
    * Clear Channel laid off tons of on-air local DJs this week, and Matt was one of them (the most obvious explanation).

Wow! Matt was the ONLY reason I listened to that station. Now all we have is fear mongers spouting their negativity! I am so disappointed!

    Dear Matt and Agnes,
I didn't always listen to you nor did I agree with all your opinions but it was wonderful that you were so knowledgeable with local and state political issues and personalities. You were let go, because you were good, giving us locals a window on what was really happening. How will they replace you with someone as competent? They won't. I feel media moguls and politicians in high places are afraid of having someone too knowlegeable of the corruption and disinformation in local and state politics voicing their opinion in the up coming election.
Wishing you both success in your next job search.

Friday 10/28/11 3:30pm, I called WWNC and asked where is Matt? She said he quit. I asked 'just quit? She said yes. I told her that I read in the New York Times that Clear Channel was cutting back on DJ's and letting them go…she replied 'ok' So I asked 'which is it was he fired or as you stated he quit' ? She said she wasnt at liberty to say…I was transfered to Brian Hall's ext..left a voice mail asking why would he let Matt go? And that Matt was our only true voice in WNC. I stated that if he goes so will the WWNC listenership. —–call WWNC and leave a message—-

Matt my husband and I were shocked when we heard the brief announcement. We realize that it is always possible with your talent that you have accepted another employment opportunity. However, if this is not the case and unethical changes were put into motion we would very much like to here your story. On another note… we want to know when you plan on running for public office… we could use new representaion in many areas. Thank you for all that you do…

This is no conspiracy. The truth will be heard very soon. In the movie JFK they use a line “when you cut down the tree, the branches fall with it. Think of Matt and Agnes being the tree and the listeners being the branches.
Oh how they are so wrong. We won’t fall. In fact we could turn into a forest. Think about it. Vote No for Sales Tax increase. Remember this is a COUNTY WIDE vote. For those that say yes, Demand commissioners guarantee this money will be used for the fine students at AB Tech.

FWIW: I didn’t always like Matt’s libertarian views and his sometimes aggressive ways of expressing them, but on Everything Else he was (is still?) always a valuable bulldog for the community. Not only that, but his support of the community during any crisis, his participation in local events, and especially hosting William Forstchen and recognizing the Honor Air Program amounted to outstanding work.

They aren't called "cheap channel" in the industry for nothing. They pretty much gutted local radio across the country with their MO of buying the viable stations in any given town, consolidating, making the staff of one station work 4, 5 or 6 stations and watching the profits rise. The local flavor, variety and excitement of radio died along with many careers.A station is no longer a license to print money.. Now they can just go automated and kill what's left or just go off the air. All they care about is the stock price anyway.

Matt and Agnes provided an excellent talk / opinion venue that stood out in today`s environment of liberal spin and coverups. They allowed ALL points of view, provided they were civil.

I sincerely hope Matt and Agnes can find a new home for a similar format show in this area, perhaps on a powerful FM station. They will be greatly missed !

I`ll be interested to see if the sister station featuring the liberal / progressive point of view has / will suffer the same treatment !

    BAD MOVE Clear Channel !

FYI: I was not part of the force reduction that occurred. I plan on talking to Jason (and others) about it in more detail soon. Right now I'm working hard to sort out taking care of my family while ensuring that a forum for free speech and diverse conversation can exist with integrity, loyalty and consistency. Those are my immediate priorities.

Clear Channel's strategy may prove successful in the macro, but there will be plenty of small markets where removing local talent could prove fatal. I believe Asheville is one such market. We'll just have to wait and see…

    Good research.

This won't stop the conspiracy theorists from creating their own alternate universe.
