The update is a little late in coming – you can see what’s happening – but always good to see it in print, I suppose:

Rick Tipton with NC DOT tells WHKP News that all the improvements being made to the I-26, I-40 interchange southwest of Asheville…known as “Malfunction Junction”…is going well and will soon be finished. The work is designed to alleviate serious congestion problems near that interchange. That work has been going on for several years, and when completed, it will add essentially a “third” lane to the interchange.
Tipton also says work is getting underway now on an all-new interchange at the intersection of I-26 and Long Shoals Road. Congestion and long lines, especially at certain times of the day and week, have made the new interchange necessary, he said.
