Nathan Ramsey learns he's lost

The biggest loser in Buncombe County on Tuesday night was Nathan Ramsey, the chairman of the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners. (Everybody, please stop calling this a “commission.”) And I don’t mean that in a bad way. I liked and respected Ramsey, and thought he was doing a good job. I voted for him.

But in an election tide like Tuesday’s sweep, sometimes good people lose. I heard Ramsey say that he didn’t take his loss personally, it’s just that people came in and voted that straight ticket, and he lost.

Ramsey shouldn’t take it personally, but his party should. Where do local Republicans go from here? There’s going to be a lot of discussion in coming weeks, I’m sure. Ramsey was the rising star of the local GOP, and he’s currently out of a public service job. That’s gotta hurt.

I don’t know what the future holds for Ramsey and the Republicans, but they’ll surely be back to fight another day.

Here’s Ramsey’s letter to the people of Buncombe:

To the good people of Buncombe County:

On behalf of my wife Robin and my dear family to whom I owe so much, please accept my heartfelt thanks for the opportunity to work for you these past eight years.

The honor I feel defies my ability to express it. To serve you as Chairman of the Board of Commissioners in the county where I grew up, attended public school, graduated from college, met my wife, and expect to live the rest of my life is an experience I will treasure until my dying days.

The good Lord has blessed me with the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people over the last eight years and I thank everyone for their kindness, friendship, and support. My congratulations go out to David, and I sincerely wish him well in the future. I ask too for God’s blessing –- on the Board of Commissioners and on all the people of Buncombe County.

Forever grateful,

Nathan Ramsey

Now Nathan can just go back to milking the cows on his farm in Fairview. I suspect this clears the way for him to sell off some of his land to the Cliffs developers.

Nathan was never the brightest person in politics, but was liked by the local good ole boy politicos cause he never caused them much trouble.

His time in politics is over, thankfully.

I voted around every incumbent due to their "Yes Man" giveaway of the Pack Square park land giveaway to developer Stuart Coleman. Good riddance, Sir.
