publix_asheville_march_2015The new 50,353-square-foot Publix grocery store along Hendersonville Road in South Asheville is set to open on April 29. It’s one of the Florida-grocery store chain’s first stores in North Carolina. About a year ago, the company announced it was expanding into the state, and has since opened a store in Charlotte and is planning to open another in Hendersonville, along with the Asheville store. (Anyone know of other NC locations?)

Publix is the latest in a wave of new grocery store openings over the past couple of years. Trader Joe’s and Harris Teeter have opened new stores next to one another on Merrimon Avenue; Whole Foods has opened a new store on Tunnel Road; and the independent Katuah Market opened, and just closed, at a location near Biltmore Village.

Jersey Mikes for sure and heard there may be a Little Caesars in the Publix shops. So the usual shopping center fare.

Jersey Mikes and Great Clips for Hair.

Publix uses third party brokers and Crossman is not exactly filling the place up. Rents have been reduced from $25 to $24 a foot plus $5.00 in cam so the smallest space is north of $3,000 a month.

A franchise operated frozen custard shop and a regional casual grill/brew house have expressed interest but have passed because of poor visibility, limited access and because Publix isn’t proven in this market like in other areas.

They are also soliciting Total Wine to take a medium box space and a personal training studio for a 1400 square foot inline space… but, my sources say not happening.

Sadly this looks like it will eventually fill up with franchise driven national/regional players that are used to paying $30 a foot in Publix centers in markets that see $25 a foot Asheville as a value.

Hoping this isn’t another Gerber Village..Not exactly an exciting tenant mix unless something/someone changes..

Publix has confirmed plans to open additional stores in Charlotte, Concord, Mooresville, Wake Forest and Winston-Salem with openings through 2016.

Any new stores announced now would likely open in 2016.

Location map for Public lists 11 in Charlotte Area with one opening 18-April and 4 others later in 2015 and through 2017. There is one in Cary and one to open 2016 in Wake Forest. There could be others; the map does not indicate the store in Hendersonville, for example.

Publix currently operates eight stores in North Carolina. Store #1453, Shops at Southline, in Charlotte opens Saturday, 18 April. Store #1429, in Miami, Florida, will mark a milestone for Publix: 1,100 stores.

Publix has not officially announced a store for Hendersonville yet, but rumors and speculation are well documented.
