mardis_building_one_2014The apartments atop the Mardis Building at 444 Haywood Road are finally complete and available for rent.

Sam Walker, Austin Walker and Russ Towers bought the building a couple of years ago and have been renovating it. They returned the building to its original look and moved in the King Daddy Chicken & Waffles restaurant and Rhetorical Factory clothing shop into the ground floor. Also, Second Gear was renovated and expanded.

Now the apartments are ready for rent. They’ll be going for $715 to $1,150 a month. There are 10 total, but two have been rented, with the first tenant moving in on Wednesday. There will be an open house from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, July 13, to give people the chance to tour the apartments and say hello to the business owners in the building.

This crew has done an amazing job on the Depression-era building. Go check it out.

(Yes, these guys are friends. Yes, they also created the new space for Crossfit Asheville behind 444 Haywood, which I love. No, they’re not paying me to say any of this.)

If you renovated building, spent that much money, and didn’t charge a pet fee, you would be a moron.

You’ve got that right – I’ve seen what kind of damage that dog and cat claws can do to hardwood floors. Not to mention pee.

          It’s not a pet fee…it’s pet-free. No pets.

As an owner of rental property, I can tell you that the mess left behind by many pets and their irresponsible owners is a serious problem for many property owners. Many times the security deposit doesn’t come close to covering the damage. Sue for the difference? Yeah right. They only have 8 units left. They will be gone in a snap and the owners won’t have to worry about the problems that can accompany pets and their owners.

The problem is the renters who have no respect for the property they are RENTING and DO NOT own. They do not care about taking care of anything. They just move on to some other place to rent and destroy after they’ve laid waste to somebody else’s property.
