The Gotham-nominated environmental film ON COAL RIVER will screen at UNCA’s Highsmith Union Grotto Tuesday March 26th at 7pm. Asheville-based Directors Francine Cavanaugh and Adams Wood will be on hand to present the film.

The following night, Wednesday March 27th, Coal River Valley’s Junior Walk will speak at UNCA Wednesday night (3/27) Junior Walk was the 2011 Recipient of the Earth Island Institute’s Brower Youth Award for Environmental Leadership.

Film Synopsis:
Coal River Valley is a community surrounded by lush mountains and a looming toxic threat. ON COAL RIVER follows a former coal miner, Ed Wiley and his neighbors in a David-and-Goliath struggle for the future of their valley, their children, and life as they know it. With insider knowledge and a sharp sense of right and wrong, Ed confronts his local school board, state government, and a notorious coal company — Massey Energy — for putting his granddaughter and his community at risk, as a result of the toxic hazards created by mountain top removal mining.

    Note that the movie showing is TUESDAY, not Wednesday. (There is, however, a speaker on Wednesday night, as listed in the public announcement).
