Ok, where’s the big ice storm?

The weather-guessers warned us all day yesterday – there’s an ice storm coming. There could massive power outages and all kinds of trees down as a quarter inch of ice accumulated on power lines and tree limbs.

WLOSers scrolled the warnings all night last night and distracted me from watching “Lost” in peace. The top headline in the local newspaper blares the warning again this morning.

But outside, all is dry. And not really that cold. Again, I ask, how can the weather soothsayers they get it so wrong?

The National Weather Service sounded the alarms on this past non-event. They were the ones that issued the Ice Storm Warnings. Per FCC law, WLOS, being a broadcast station in the market, must air the warnings to their viewers, which is why you saw the crawls on the bottom of your screen.

As for the forecast, it was a complete bust on the part of the NWS. 12 hours prior to the "predicted onset" of the event, it was evident that there was no threat for an ice storm. Other than a few icy patches of freezing drizzle, it was a no brainer that it was going to be a cold rain. Anyone with a bit of meteorological training could have seen that. I’m not sure what the NWS was thinking other than being a bit over protective of their coverage area, but anyone that went along with that forecast because they are the NWS was completely nuts!

I saw the baby thing coming as soon as Claire asked Kate to hold her baby…and then the weird baby talk with Sawyer afterwards.

It was one of the few twists I acutally worked out before it happened this season.

Thank goodness for WLOS in HD. So far there are no scrolly things interrupting programming.

And how about last night’s "Lost"??? I was totally caught off-guard by that last scene. This season is beyond freaky.

Didn’t WLOS do an entire sweeps spot on the weird, asheville weather systems?

I vaguely remember it from sometime last year.

I did not see any ice storm warnings – but I get my weather news from the DirecTV weather channel – which is usually correct. It has forecast 58 degrees and partly cloudy skies for tomorrow. So much for an ice storm!

Also, that idiot Cuevas said we could not see the eclipse because it was too cloudy. I live just west of downtown Asheville and I saw the whole eclipse perfectly clear! What planet is Mike Cuevas on?

Asheville is a mountain micro climate.

Due to our position in the valley, most weather patterns get broken up by the surrounding highland to the west, north, and east.

It takes a HUGE storm system to ensure we get any specific kind of weather.

The thing is, there was supposed to be an ice storm. It’s not just Cuevas who got it wrong — most of the major weather services were handing down warnings too. Heck, even weather.com was all ablaze with ICE STORM OF THE CENTURY notices. So yeah, News 13 got it wrong, but so did everybody else.

    North Carolina is weird.
