Nominations for 2009 North Carolina Award open; Asheville’s Charles Frazier won last year

RALEIGH, N.C. – Nominations for the 2009 North Carolina Award, the highest civilian honor bestowed by the state, are now being accepted. Created by the General Assembly in 1961, and administered by the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, the award recognizes significant contributions of individuals in the fields of fine arts, literature, public service, and science over time. 

Award nominations may include biographies, resumes and letters of support, and may be submitted by anyone. They should be sent to the North Carolina Awards Committee, N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, 4601 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, N.C. 27699-4601. Nominations will be accepted by the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources until April 15. 

The North Carolina Awards Committee will review the nominations and select the recipients this summer. The recipients, representing the best of North Carolina, will be honored during ceremonies in Raleigh in the fall. 

Award recipients in 2008 were Maurice Brookhart, Chapel Hill, for science; Charles Frazier, Asheville, for literature; Gerald Freedman, Winston-Salem, for fine arts; Ann Goodnight, Cary, for public service; Margaret Maron, Johnston County, for literature; James G. Martin, Lake Norman, for public service; the late Alexander Rivera, for fine arts; Dean Smith, Chapel Hill, for public service; and Fred and Alice Stanback, Salisbury, for public service.
