Isn’t this John Roche of the band Eustachian?
While I’m always happy to welcome a new store to downtown Asheville, I am less inclined to do so if the new store owner feels compelled to denigrate former downtown merchants as part of their announcement.
Really? I’m not sure that’s necessary and at the very least it is off-putting. If that much distance from Old North State was deemed important, picking another name for his new store might have been the more appropriate answer.
Seems pretty thin-skinned to see someone as saying that a store “might have rubbed people the wrong way” is somehow bad-mouthing a business owner. Almost any store that is around for ten years will have fans and detractors.
I hope these folks do great business and continue to build the Lexington Avenue scene for years to come.
I agree with Mr. Bourne. I’m also puzzled why Old North would say those disagreeable things about The Old North State Clothing Company, which was a fine store owned and operated by excellent people.
Seldom do you find a store with everything…i thought Old North came pretty damn close. From the boots that define your collection, to the jeans that will accompany them on the gypsy travels–this place was really an island of old school heritage and tradition in the middle of Asheville. I got sucked in by a pair of warm brown Red Wings…then proceeded to sequester myself among things that Paul Bunyan and Steve McQueen might’ve worn–and instantly grew a beard. I came down from Chicago and it was a breath of fresh air being in this completely unassuming shop…Renn (shop owner) and Nigel (coolest spaniard in town) were only there to facilitate and give advice…if solicited. But the products kinda sell themselves…awesome store, good people, and all that stuff you wanna keep forever.
If Jack wanted “NO affiliation” with The Old North State he would have chosen a different name. This confuses me.
People will associate it with the Old North State, because it was a downtown store that was here for 10 years and it sold clothes.
I can assure you that there is plenty of goodwill left over from that store, as well. The former owners are damn fine people who are sorely missed in this community.
Some more originality would have served Jack well.
Except that it’s a radically different store in a completely different part of downtown, carrying wildly divergent products. It has four words in the name, and two of those are the same as a store that was several blocks away a few years ago?
I can promise you, based on the products they will be carrying no one is going to wander in and be confused.
Welcome to the neighborhood! I wish you the best, Old North.

Our general charter is to have a place for all ages of men to have a place to buy quality, handmade goods specific to the US/Japan. Our #1 passion is quality over quantity. We also want to bring back a high level of customer service and build an environment within our store that reflects the rugged man. Our motif is simple and focuses on an old school manly store where men can find haven to be reminded of the yesteryear and the quality that it once was.
We also want to publicly make it clear we have NO affiliation with the former store “The Old North State Clothing Company” which operated in Asheville for 10 yrs and closed last year.
We are a brand new company and brand and look forward to having a clean slate and hopefully not being associated with a store that might have rubbed folks the wrong way.
That being said, we would like to announce our grand opening on March 8th 2013.
Thanks again Jason for taking the time to scout out the store, and if you would like to have further dialog to smith a interview or an expanded article i would love to do so.
Cheers again and thanks for the warm welcome.
Jack Roche / Owner – Old North
Hey Jack,
Thanks so much for your note and additional info. I’ll catch up with you after the holidays to do a bigger write-up for the newspaper/blog. Congratulations and good luck!
Is this a resurrection of The Old North State Clothing Co that was on Biltmore then Broadway?
no. something completely different. definitely shooting for a younger demographic.
I’ve been looking for a $240.00 pair of jeans in this town …
I need a mustache growler!
