I heard that Neo Cantina is up and running. That’s the new name for the old La Paz. The sudden changeover caught more than a few fans of the Mexican joint down in Biltmore Village by surprise, but it appears Neo Cantina is chugging right along.

I’m getting reports that the food is still perfectly delicious, although the La Paz staff may have taken all their recipes with them when they bolted. Neo Cantina plans to feature a roof garden, bio-degradable to-go boxes, and more food from local farms. O, and there’s a tortilla machine.

That’s all I’ve got. What about you?

When we first arrived we had to use the wheel chair access ramp because I was pushing my daughter in a stroller. At the top of the access ramp there were three people sitting at the table drinking and carrying on. I believe that a couple of these people were employees (or managers) as I saw them later walk into the kitchen. Basically, they were blocking my access into the restaurant and didn't offer to move any of their chars to help make a path (they were obviously drunk and one of the guys was talking about thumbs up and how much he loves his boyfriend) When inside, it took about 5 minutes to be seated because there was no hostess around. The food was mediocre and the service sucked. My wife walked away with sharp stomach pains. Don't waste you time at this place. Don't be fooled by the trendy sign out front.

Neo Burrito has spent your money wisely. You can see the installed solar panels in the back of their West Asheville location along with there vegetable patch.

Wow, more claims of green technology from the Neo chain. I’m still waiting to hear of the installation of solar panels at Neo Burrito (that I foolishly supported by purchasing plants over a year ago). I guess now we know where that money went –> more restaurants —> bigger wallet. I applaud the eradication of styrofoam to go containers, but unfortunately the rest of the claims are lies. I would be willing to bet that we all will see a third Neo restaurant before we see these solar panels, rooftop gardens, and even locally purchased food that we keep hearing about. I for one will not be supporting any business that gets ahead by lying to the community.

I am responsible for the rebranding of the old La Paz to the new Neo Cantina. We are excited to be a part of taking a beloved Atlanta corporate institution to local ownership and operation.

Our mission is to continue to provide all your favorites with a fresh twist.

In the style of our sister restaurant Neo Burrito, we are currently negotiating with local produce, meat, cheese and dessert vendors in order to provide the tastiest ingredients while having the least impact on our environment.

We will be supplying some of our produce from our own gardens which are being planned for the restaurant grounds for a spring planting. More about roof garden in the near future !

Upon entering Neo Cantina, you will find slight changes each week to the menu and decor.

The back private dining room (we can seat up to 60 comfortably- email [email protected] for more information) has been painted with the peaceful turquoise color that will be used throughout the restaurant. Thanks to Anna Parker-Barnett from Gallery Minerva on Biltmore Avenue for her design assistance.

All styrofoam products were immediately removed and replaced by fully compostable products, to reduce our contribution to the local land fills.

We will be monitoring our progress on energy consumption and environmental improvements and will be relaying this infomation on our website (in process) at http://www.neocantina.com.

We are proud to be part of Historic Biltmore Village and will be utilizing our vast wall space to display the history of the building and the village as well as an overview of our green local partners.

Immediate plans include flat screen TV additions(scheduled for April 5th) in the bar area,
Trivia night with Dr. Dan Brown each Monday night starting at 8p- $50 grand prize and other surprises- come check it out.

The patio is OPEN and ready for your enjoyment. Future additions to the patio will include a tortilla machine and hydroponic grow areas. This will allow us to have some form of outdoor dining year round and improve the quality and wholesomeness of our tortillas.

We value each and every one of our patrons and appreciate your continued support as we transform the restaurant into great fresh mexican fare. Please ask for me- Sherrye or a manager when you join us and let us know your opinion on how we are doing, as well as your recommendations on how we can make Neo Cantina your favorite dining experience.

Maybe they should try creating their own menu and recipes instead of copying la paz…

I ate there this weekend. Not much to say except I miss La Paz. Service was slow, and food was bland. I agree with other posters. No reason to visit again.

Ate there last night. What a disappointment. Gone are the more gourmet blue corn and red pepper tortilla chips which have been replaced by the same stale crappy chips you can get at any cheap mexican dive. Black beans and rice were dry and tasteless and the food was over seasoned.

No longer worth the money. I miss La Paz.

I must admit, I enjoyed the food and the drinks. The staff was very responsive and friendly. Zak Yancey is doing a great job as a restaurant owner is such a competitive town. I look forward to seeing more Neo’s popping up around town.

ate there last night. dear god it was awful… and over priced! $14 for a nondescript burrito with some bad rice and beans on the side. fish tacos were three fish fry’s plopped onto tortillas. and to boot, no beer on tap! I see no reason for me to ever, ever go there again. i hope for their sake that this is just an adjustment period of bad culinary decisions.

Oh Bruce! Being a Texan I almost daily miss the myriad of choices for Mexican food in Austin. Don’t be fooled this is a play on Mexi for sure, but the ingredients have always been fresh and they do have some good choices.

Yes, Jeremy it is in fact the same owner of Neo Burrito on Patton. I’ve found his food to be for the most part really good. Kinda blows the other burrito joints in town away in my humble opinion. I’ll actually go down there now to eat once in a while.

Agree about La Paz – went there maybe twice in my 10 years of living here. Didn’t really enjoy it either time. Glad there’s something new there now.

Having moved here from Austin, I was never impressed by La Paz. Neo Cantina? I’ll give ’em a try.

Looks like this is from the same crew that runs Neo Burrito in West Asheville, no? This could be a very good thing for Biltmore Village.

LaPaz was nothing special — just another branch of a chain of Mexican restaurants that you can find in many cities. There food was never consistent or stellar in any way. Hopefully, the latest occupant of this real estate will provide higher quality Mexican food and service.

Went to an Asheville Chamber event there last Friday. Appetizers were delicious and the staff were very attentive. They didn’t have a liquor license yet so were only serving wine & beer, but I’m sure they’ll have that sorted out soon.
