David Young, the former Buncombe County commissioner, is in Raleigh this afternoon as he seeks to be elected to be chairman of the state Democratic Party.

I have to believe that Young is the favored candidate over Luke Hyde and Danny Montgomery. Young is past president of the state’s county commissioners association, he’s on the UNC Board of Governors and he’s got the backing of Gov. Beverly Perdue.

The Citizen-Times’ Raleigh reporter, Jordan Schrader, is covering the event and blogged about the start of the state Democratic Party’s Executive Committee meeting. According to Schrader, Young:

emphasized the grassroots, promising transparency and accessibility to the rank-and-file.

He promised to focus on all 100 counties and continue the technological advances he ascribed to current chairman Jerry Meek, another Young supporter.

“Even I’ve got friends on Facebook now,” Young said.

The meeting is at N.C. State University. I have no doubt that Young, a UNC graduate, is hoping the meeting is done before the tip-off of the State-Carolina basketball game this afternoon so he can pull for his Tar Heels.
