ASHEVILLE – Five entrepreneurs were honored Sept. 16 at an awards ceremony marking the 28th annual Minority Enterprise Development Week in Asheville.

The Minority Enterprise Awards serve to recognize the outstanding achievements of minority-owned businesses in Western North Carolina over the past year. Awards were presented at a recognition reception at Coleman Place above the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce.

This year’s five winners are:

Construction category: Accem Scott – Green Brothers Solar

Restaurant category: Juan Martinez – Cielito Lindo

Retail category:  Brenda Macauley – Aesthetic Gallery

Service category:  Patricia Oocumma – NativeScapes Landscaping

2010 Minority Business Person of the Year: Horace Adell, Jr. – Clean Streak Inc.

WNC MED week is part of a nationally-held event and is organized by the MED Week Committee of WNC. The week includes expos for minority businesses, seminars and panels designed to provide information on business financing and positioning for small businesses and start-ups as well as events like tours of the AB Tech business incubator.
