Franny Tacy, a farmer in Leicester, has recently been named the Featured Farmer for Hemp History Week 2018, which will be held June 4-10.
The week will be marked by a celebration at Franny’s Farm on June 5. The Hemp Hootenanny, organized by HempX Asheville, will feature hemp-focused workshops and demonstrations, local and national hemp vendors, foods and beer, as well as Dr. Bronner’s Magic Foam Experience and live music.
Hemp History Week bills itself as the largest national grassroots effort aimed at supporting industrial hemp farming in the United States
Last year, Tacy planted a plot of industrial hemp on her farm under a pilot program approved by state lawmakers and under the watchful eye of the N.C. Industrial Hemp Commission.
The experiment comes amid other national moves to bring hemp into the mainstream. Notably,
U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell recently announced a push to legalize hemp. The bill would remove hemp from the federal list of controlled substances. The Hemp Farming Act of 2018 is intended to help farmers diversity.
